SOURCE: Sole has worn off. Can

There are two possibilities, if the upper is in good condition and you really like the shoes. One is to find a shoe repair shop, the repairer will tell you if it is possible and what the cost will be.

The other option is to find a general store which sells stick on soles for shoes. With a little luck, you may find some which resemble the soles on your Nikes. If so, it is an easy enough cheap repair and should last for a while, but it will never be as good as the original. or a professional repair.

SOURCE: I have stripped the mountings inside the sole and

I have repaired several types of cycling shoes before. Unfortunately the repair parts are usually only available from the manufacturer.
BUT, have you tried returning them to the store? If that doesn't help, contact the manufacturer. They may send you another pair (happens frequently) or at least the repair parts to take to your local Shoe Repair shop.

Adidas SpringBlade running shoe tread splitting

there is not much hope for a solution to this problem as it is common to all shoes sold
Why adidas will not help is that they and all shoe manufacturers are aware that all shoes have a shelf life and if the shoe is not used in a short period of time after manufacturer the material used starts to break down and become unstable
it is the movement of the sole that sets the material and produces a long wear period but shoes ( and boots ) bought and stored will fail quickly with sole problems ( cracking, falling off , bits falling out etc )
Best advice is wear all your shoes on a regular basis for the first few months before leaving them in the cupboard and to get a retailer that will offer a replacement pair if the soles fail in a short period of time as a good will gesture for the customer
of course you can always resort to legal action as there is an expectation by the purchaser that the goods will last for a reasonable period of time regardless of expressed warranty period or not

8 yr old boots. Both have cracked width-wise across the sole. One has cracked deeply through all the layers, the other is not as deep, but not great. Can these be fixed?

no--
the problem is that the soles have a formula in the sole that deteriorates with age or lack of use and the composition breaks down
the same thing will happen if you buy new with the same type of sole material and put them in the cupboard for say a year , then wear them , the soles will break in about 3 hours of wearing

Why is the sole sticky and crumbling?

This sounds like these shoes have been kept in humid areas that is causing the PU to deteriorate.

The sole if the shoe cracked in half on both shoes

If the sole is cracked, you are left with shoes that can't be fixed. Were you wearing these in the cold? That makes soles split.
