SOURCE: Replaced transmission on my John
Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly
This is a generic response to all John Deere Variator linkages but most likely what you must do with a transmission change.
To adjust the "Variator linkage" do the following.
1. Pry off the buttons on the side that cover the access holes located just below the variable speed lever.
2. Put the variable speed lever in notch #5.
3. Loosen cap screw one or two turns. This is located inside the hole.
4. Disconnect and ground the spark plug.
5. Turn ignition key to crank engine until clutch-brake pedal raises as high as it will go.
6. Take up linkage slack by pushing down on cap screw (see step #2). Tighten cap screw.
NOTE: If the tractor won't move with the variator in the first notch after these adjustments then the primary drive belt needs to be replaced.
I am concerned that maybe you did not connect the linkage properly but you have to do the above steps if no matter what you do you only have slow speeds.

That is a cap screw you are talking about. The size of it is 7/16" X 1-3/4". The John Deere part # is 19H2563, but I am sure you can just get one at the local hardware store. I could not find out for sure, but on most blades they use a fine-thread bolt/screw. If you can tell the difference, check before you buy, or just buy both and see which one threads in easily. Hope all this helps.

find someone who can read and use the internet
go to www.google.com
search for john deere lawn tractors
go to the john deere website and click around under "support" until you find the manuals
download a manual for your model,l but they are all about the same
have the person who can read, read you the part in the manual about adjusting the deck height and how to level it.
there you go, bob's your uncle.
