Hi Manpha,
Sorry but your older games will not work on Vista.
This is because Vista is a 64bit operating system and most games are either 32bit or even 16bit.
Older games also do not have the sound and graphic capabilities that newer games do and most graphics cards use shaders and Open GL drivers which older games do not have.
Sorry but you will have to upgrade your games or buy an older machine just to run your games on.
I have my work machine, my games machine ( for new games like Halo 2 and Unreal) and then I also have a dual boot machine for games like Solder of Fortune and Far Cry, this machine can boot into Windoze XP or Windoze 98, which ever I choose from the boot menu.
It's a pain in the neck I know but progress makes perfect!!!

The game is older and won't run on my laptop's vista OS. Is there some sort of patch that I could download? I don't want to have to go buy a new OS just to play a game. If you have a...

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
Of which game you are talking about? Kindly tell me the name so that I can search of any kind of patch available.
What you can try is, goto your game directory where the game is installed, find the icon from which the game is run. Right click that file >> Click properties and you will see a compatibility tab at the top. Click it and select the operating system that is compatible for this game like Windows Xp from the drop down list.
I hope you will have a clear picture now.
Concerned, Nooh.

I have an acer travelmate 2440 and it wont play sims 2 at all, it just gives me an error message about direcy x and ive already installed drivers and driver updates i dont know what to do!!!

Direct X is a miccrosoft video 'layer' it helps to generate video and sound. If you don;t have it installed then games or other programs that need it will not start or error out.

This ia free download from Microsoft. If you go to then in the search type directx download and in the results you are lookig for a title called DirectX End User Runtime Web Installer

Click on the download button and save or run it.
That will download and install directx . Once it is done then reboot and try your game.

Usually most games will check and see if you need directx and try to install it but some don't.

And I have no idea why everything is being typed in bold ;-]

System Requirements

With your Extensa you should be fine with the video and sound cards, as long as yours meets the 2ghz + 1g RAM, you shouldn't have any problems with the game. If you are, try updating to the latest sound and video drivers. Also, if you're sitting on 1g of RAM now, you might consider bumping it up to 2g. This will help it run smoother and avoid crashing during a gaming session.

Lost Mind of Dr Brain

There is a simple solution to this problem, making the game runnable on any current windows operating system.

Simply insert the CD into the drive. Then open My Computer, right click on the Dr. Brain disk and click open. After you have the game files open, right click on the executable file named "DRBRAIN3.EXE" and go to properties.

Click the compatibility tab at the top. Finally check the box that says run in 256 colors and the problem is solved.

You should only have to do this one time.
