Question about Weller Standard Tip: 7200

Open Question

What can I expect for normal use of the weller model 7200

I bought this unit used at a 2nd hand shop, it heats, but takes forever to melt solder, I am using regular plumbers soft solder, with flux, which works great with my other soldering irons, but this unit takes forever and barely works with a few stands of wire and a thin contact.

I did what Rod Walberg suggested, only I went a little further, and removed the solder tip from the set screws and cleaned the ends with a piece of emery cloth, put it together and waa laa it work great now. Thanks!

Wont heat enough to solder

Hello, does your solder iron --Weller- humming? Also, is the solder tips the right tips for you Weller woldering gun? Are the tips tightened on the end of the solder gun prongs?

Well, if it is humming there is internal short in the windings inside of the gun. Don't mess with. Recyle it by taking the copper, brass, aluminum, and other metal out. Now, if it is not humming.
Make sure you have right tips, make sure that the tip is tightened in the soldering gun prongs.

The working principal of these soldering guns is that they work on low voltage and very high current. The current is regulated to keep the tip from burning into. Just enough current to heat the tipe to a certain temperature.. It can shock you but there not enough voltage with current but it will hurt. and could burn you. Be careful and lots of luck...GB...stewbison

I bought the gun years ago and never used it. Now I need to solder my eyeglasses frame and have no idea ho to do it. How do I start? It's a dual 140/100 watt gun

Often the material used for eyeglass frames will NOT take solder.
If you want to try soldering you likely will need a flux that has zinc chloride. You should probably use a harder solder like StayBrite. You put some flux on the joint which needs to be held fixed while soldering. You heat the joint with the soldering tip and apply a little of the solder. One should "tin" or wet the tip before using by applying flux to the tip and melting a little solder on it. Search YouTube as someone probablly has a video on soldering.

How do i use this product(Weller model Standard 7200)?

You need the nuts that hold the tip in the iron--slide them on, then bend the ends sideways with pliers and leave about 1/4" sticking out sideways. Be sure to make the upper and lower bends in the same direction. Be sure to tin the new tip with solder when you first heat the tip. Hope this helps!

How long to i leave it on

Turn it on long enough to melt solder, then switch off for a short time. Repeat this process as you solder to avoid oxidizing the tip and solder, yet keeping the solder fluid. If it starts to poorly heat the tips, tighten the tip nuts somewhat to break the oxidation that occurs on the bare copper. Hope this helps!

Does not melt solder

The body contains a transformer, which steps your 120AC down to a lower voltage. The lower voltage runs THROUGH the tip, heating it up. Possibility ONE: Transformer is no good, throw it away. TWO: Not enough current is running through tip, because tip is corroded OR those mounting nuts are corroded, loose, OR somebody put new tip into nuts but neglected to bend both legs of new tip 90 degrees. Look at the barrels, you will see little holes in the sides, tip's legs go into those holes.

Weller model 550PK heavy-duty soldering gun is slow to heat up

It depends on what you say is slow, I have used weller soldering guns and desoldering guns for about 30 years. They come up to top heat in about 3min. If it is taking longer than that then there is a problem with the heating unit. You can call weller tech help number, should be on iron base and they can tell you how to test the heat unit.

No longer melts solder with tip....

You have burned out residue on the tip. Clead it off with a damp cloth when the iron is hot. If this doesn't get it all, use steel wool. Immediately afterwards, get flux & solder onto the tip or it will get coated again.
