Question about Dell OptiPlex GX520 PC Desktop

Open Question

Dell optiplex Gx520, multiple 444444444 entries

On ebtering any package with a 'search' / 'data entry' field a continuous stream of 444444444444444 fills the field. In Microsoft Word, after startup and 'Page' appearing, the page fills with 4444444444 line after line automatically. Would this be anything to do with Norton Security as the machine is off line in chasing another problem and Norton is looking for auto update. This is not my machine and I have never seen this fault before.

    have you tried another keyboard?

  • John Mills Feb 24, 2012

Many thanks to all who took the trouble to offer advice, I was looking at a fault on the computer for a friend and it threw me to start with when I put my own keyboard and mouse on it and all was well. I returned the PC to him to check his keyboard and mouse only to find they were wireless and the batteries were flat. Fitting new batteries and starting up, the 44444444 was back and I then found his numeric pad - key '4' slightly depressed. Hitting it and rebooting the final problrm cleared. He had got a jammed down key, #4 and it had flattened the keyboard batteries and the mouse batteries had died naturally. Problem solved all is working well. Once again many thanks to all. John Mills.

SOURCE: need to upgrade memory in dell optiplex GX520

If you do not mind the trouble it would be best to unhook all cables and take it to a place like Best Buy and have them install more or larger memory modules, which most places do for free anyway. If you want to do it yourself then let me know. It is still fairly easy. Before you take it somewhere make sure and look on "My Computer" and jot down the exact memory first before unplugging it.

The GX520 does support the Pentium D, but it depends on what motherboard is in your system as some do and some don't. By entering the service tag of the computer you should be able to determine whether your motherboard is compatible.

My dell optiplex gx520 sounds like it continues to startup for 20+ minutes. Windows load but I cannot do anything.

possibly your windows has become corrupted..try reinstalling it..if your dell came with pre-installed software, then you could use the OS reinstallation cd..note that you may loose all your data since reinstallation will include formating and deleting all your previous data
