Question about Gateway GM5084 PC Desktop

1 Answer

No screen at power on

I have a gateway gm5084 desk top unit. When powered on the light on the monitor goes from amber to blue like normal but nothing is displayed on the screen. I have removed all pci cards modem and wintv, I have removed all but one memory card I have removed the dvd cable all usb cables, tryed different hard drive cable locations, in otherwords I have skinnied down the unit and have eliminated anything that could be holding it down. I have measured the voltages and have 5.06 for 5 and 11.64 for 12. I put another video pci card in. The original is on the mother board. Its acting like the bios is not even coming up. Looking for ideas.. Thanks

the power supply is way underpowered for the processor.

i am trying a larger power supply

I have the same problem. The only work around I have found is to turn the computer off by holding down the switch and turning it on again, repeat about 5-10 times and it finally boots the bios...sometimes. I have also switched out the video card, cd drive, hard drive, and memory cards to no avail. Haven't tried the cpu or motherboard yet. Also the computer has gotten really sluggish and won't wake up quickly from screensaver state.
I ran a bunch of diagnostic tests and they all say the computer is performing just fine.

I was getting the blue screen for a few months, and now when I power my Gateway GM5084 the lights come on and I hear it running but nothing comes up on the monitor. It's like it's not connecting...

First I would try a different video card to see if your video card is faulty or not. If you still can't seem to get any picture it could be that the power supply on your computer is starting to fail and not providing enough power to the video card.

Usually your PC will beep if it is a video card issue so if you don't hear beeps I would guess the power supply is the culprit. A replacement power supply is not that expensive and is quite easy to install as well.

I added a new video card and the monitor wont come on

1) Did you plug the monitor into the graphics card?

(Hey, happens! Sometimes in our zealousness to see what that baby will do, we mess up a little)

2) Did you install the Drivers? First?

These will be on the installation disk that comes with the graphics card.
Recommend installing the software from the disk FIRST, then turn the computer off, unplug from power, install the graphics card.

3) Does the graphics card require additional power?

Some graphics cards will not receive enough power, from the graphics expansion slot they are inserted into.

[Gateway GM5084 uses a PCI Express x16 slot, for best graphics.

Some powerful graphics cards require additional power cables from the Power Supply.

Nothing comes up on the screen

The monitor connected to the system is set to receive video signals from the DVI port on the video card and it is not getting a signal.

Possible Causes:
  1. Monitor is connected via VGA (Blue Connector). Fix by using the input select button to select DVI input)
  2. The video cable is not connected to the correct port on the system (Or not connected at all)
  3. The monitor is on, but the tower is not powering on or failing to complete the Power On Self-Test (POST). It the power LED on the tower is NOT on, or solid or flashing Amber then the tower is not posting. Flashing amber is normally a bad power supply, solid amber is the motherboard.
