Make sure you are working the dial properly for this type of safe. With the door lever fully counter clockwise, turn the dial clockwise a couple turns to start. It should turn quietly. Then turn the dial counterclockwise (LEFT) to the first number in the combination. Now turn the dial clockwise (RIGHT) a full turn passing the first number again, and additionally clockwise to the second number. Then turn the dial counter clockwise from the second number directly to the third number. Try to open with a sharp movement of the door lever clockwise. If this does not work the first time try adding or subtracting ONE to each number in the combination in case the mechanism is worn. If it still does not work it is time for a drill and a power saw to cut the thing open!

When you put in the combo a little actuator gets an electric current, making it move out of the way of the door bolt mechanism so that you can turn the handle and open the door. That little actuator has pulled in when you entered the combo, allowing you to turn the handle. Problem is that the handle gets turned a little too much allowing that actuator to pop back out on the wrong side of the works, essentially locking it in the open position. You can try put pressure on the handle toward the open position and enter your code in order to make the actuator move. If that doesn't work, you have to pop the inside cover off the door. Then you can get to the works and see how the thing works. It's a very simple design. Actually too simple. Whatever you do, don't try to close the safe door with the door panel off. That door panel holds some of the bolt gears in place. I closed mine without that panel and am currently breaking into it since it won't open again. Learn by my mistake. I'm going to buy a new safe and get rid of this thing. But good luck.

I have 2 Sentry 1610 Safes. A fresh alkaline battery MAY open the safe once (maybe twice), and then the same problem. I have a variable DC power supply that I hook up to the battery terminals, set to 9 volts and increase the current until the keypad responds & the deadbolt releases. Sentry has no solution for this problem, as this model is too old & they have no parts or troubleshooting. If you know someone with a small DC Power Supply, you can get your safe open / closed.
