My recorder keeps giving me a error msg with a 1x-16x disc. I have been unable to locate the disc 1x-4x. Im getting very frustrated with this unit. Radio Shack, Staples & Walmart all have told me the same thing "the 1x-16x disc should work with your unit. Can you help me with this problem or help me locate some 1x-4x discs. Thanks
Re: Unable to record on DVD-R Disc with my EWR20V4
I cannot record on my Emerson either and I am wondering what I should do at this point? Do I have to dispose of the unit and all the DVD's that I have recorded or is there an upgrade that will allow me to keep my unit and the Hundreds of DVD that I have?

E4 error code means that the disc isn't being read, because the unit is dirty or the optical eye is going out .You have to get a cleaning kit and then proceed.
you may try this: unplug from wall, wait 15 minutes, plug back in, and reset the clock, or The disc must be DVD-R with an R4.7 under the logo and they MUST be 4X or 8X specific .... the cannot be 1X - 8X or 1X - 16X or note up to 16X .... the disc box must state 4X or 8X ONLY .... and yes they are hard to find for sure
You will need to call Funai 1 800 605 8457 give them your brand / model number and expose your problem - they should be able to send you an upgrade disc but it will cost you -
If you want my advice - you DO NOT need a 16x disc inside a DVD recorder - the optical drives used on DVD recorders and even worse a Funai drive are quite bad as it is in terms of writing strats for higher speeds - you are better off recording at 8x on a 16x disc.this will provide better burns ( lower PIE/PIF errors and jitter %).
You can't use 16x or anything that says 1x-16x or 1x-4x.
The 4X speed DVD-R are difficult to find. (Tried Office Depot,OfficeMax, Staples, Microcenter,Best Buy and Walgreens!) Finally found Princo brand at checkoutstore.com http://www.checkoutstore.com/Princo-4X-DVD-R-4-7GB-White-Top-p/prin4wt.htm They worked great!
The unit is saying that its an "Un-format disc" problem. Is this the only error code you are getting? Also, what types of DVDs are being used? As in, DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+R DVD-RW and what speeds? 1x 2x 4x 8x 16x?

The problem is likely that you are using 8x/2x media. Though the booklet does not say it, the burner does not support anything above 4x for DVD-R and 1x for DVD-RW. Calling their tech support can (possibly) get an update for this problem. Otherwise, the burner cannot use anything but outdated media.
