Question about Toshiba Tecra 8100 Notebook

1 Answer

My Tecra 8100 will no longer boot

I played around with my Tecra 8100, it had Windows 2000 on it and I want to install Widows xp pro. Somehow I ended up using a floppy I thought was a boot disk but it actually wiped out something (bios?)because now I get nothing when I turn on the laptop. The laptop show the harddisk light for a second, then the light goes out and there is no boot. The screen just stays dark. What did I do and how can I fix it? I feel this is probably a soft ware thing? How do you install a operating system in this situation? Thank you, Anne

    Thank you, the laptop turns on and off, with the first three green lights coming on, then the HD green light comes on for a moment, the screen stays black. When I turn the laptop off again I hear one longer and 29 short beeps. I read somewhere the beeps may tell about the bios? I do not know anything else, I just like this old laptop and would like to get it going again and load windows xp on it.

    PS, the hard disk of this laptop was tested in another tecra 8100 and it works great, it now has win xppro on it.

    Does the laptop turn off or is it just the hd light? And have you tried to enter the bios?

I suspect you already tried the drivers. Dell site only has drivers from 2001. You may have to roll back or purchase new cards. It's the same reason I can't use Win8.

Just bought a couple of HP 8100 Elite desktops. How can I downgrade them to Windows XP pro ?

You would have to buy yourself a copy of XP pro and do an OS reinstall. The XP pro should come with a COF key. When you do that you will need to install all the drivers for your computer. Check at the manufacturers website and download all the drivers for your PC that work with windows XP. Do this first then do the OS install.

Will not run xp pro i'm stuck in 2000 mode mother board is ak77 pro 133 vt8233 will not run xp pro i've been told im pretty much sol. Is this true?

If you have a valid Win XP Pro CD and want to install the operating system you'll need to format your hard disk drive. If you have allot of data on you're hard disk drive, (In Win 2000) Suggest you create a second partition within the free space of you're hdd and install windows XP Pro. Boot you're system with the XP CD. Pay close attention to the display screens. Follow the instructions for creating a second partition.
Format the new partition. (Quick). Install windows XP on the new partition. Once completed you can copy your personal data to win XP.
If you choose to keep the win 2000 partition and you do not wish to have a dual boot system than remove/delete the root files from the 2000 partition. These files; Autoexec.bat and Boot.ini. You're new XP Boot.ini should read like this;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
Once you're satisfied an no longer need win 2000 use windows diskmgmt.msc from the run command to delete the win 2000 partition.
Win 2000 uses a FAT16 where Win XP uses the FAT NTFS.

Cheers!
Mike

XP Pro only starts in Safe Mode

this is basically problem related to your hardware.. please check that you meet all the hardware requirements as well as you must have proper copy of that Xp to be installed. And if that so, then you must go BIOS settings by Pressing F8 key at booting time where you must change your booting sequence...Your problem will be solved.
if it doesn't work,then check all the drivers to be needed after installing the XP.
If the problem still persists, then you must reinstall XP.

Help with a toshiba TECRA 8100

Yes, it should run WinXP. The minimum system requirements to run both Windows XP Home and Professional are 233Mhz, 64Mb RAM and 1.5GB hard drive space. I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 that still runs XP, a little slow, but has run smoothly for 5 years.

The setupdd.sys error is most likely a due to a defective hardware like RAM. Try installing only one ram if you have two to see if either one is defective; it should work for most users.

CPU Upgrade

You pulled the processor out of your laptop ... that was a brave move ... generally laptop boards are fully integrated so there is very few options on changing the processor ... also because of the extreme heating conditions the heat sink bonding is very critical ... make sure you replace this properly or you will have overheating issues in the future ...

Your laptop is not new enough for winxp. There are no drivers for it.Im surprised that the BIOS let you install it.
I would try to use the win2000 drivers, they may work.
Sorry for the not so good news.

Please let me know how you make out.
