My RS-TR272 tape deck plays the cassette but no sound. I have not even used it much, may be 3-4 times in last five years. I tried demagnetizing it but still no effect. It is brand new unit, only thing I did last time was that plugged in the RCA cables in opposite ways one time (Output in In and In into output one). I am not sure if that had any bad effect on it. Can someone please help on this as unit shows cassette playing. There is no volume switch on the unit itself as someone else recommended in the previous answer.

Cassette decks that have been sitting for long periods have problems with drive belts and idlers becoming slack or decomposing of the rubber compound. If you wish to keep the unit, please have it cleaned and have belts/idlers replaced with new ones by a professional service. Also have controls and switches cleaned of built up tarnish and mildew to prevent noisey or drop-out audio

You can get drive belts from E-Bay. All you need to do is work out the diameter (approx) and how thick they are.
Can't help with where they go as I don't know the make.

More than likely the pre-amp IC has failed! Trace the wires from the VU meters back they should locate the source of the problem. Remember it will be something common to both channels!

press the synchro start button, the tape deck should now go to REC PAUSE, press the SPEED button till you get the required recording speed then press the synchro start again and it should start to record from deck 1 to deck 2.
make sure the tabs at the top of the tape you want to record on are intact,
if not just put a bit of sticky tape over holes.
hope this helps?
