Question about Craftsman 21 HP 42 in. Zero Turn Tractor Mower - CA Model

1 Answer

Switch??? Just had several pulleys changed by a Sear repair man. Now the control handles will always have to be held or the mower goes in motion. The problem is that the engine will not always start. It will start if I shake it or move it back and forth as if trying to get it into a neutral gear. I read about PTO but am not sure what it does. Can you help. Thanks.

PTO stands for Power Take Off. Sounds like a couple of things need work, or replacement. Would look at any electrical connections or sensors that are attached to the control for "neutral" sensing - usually that is a safety feature that prevents you from starting while in gear. Also would look at the control itself for proper operation or worn components.

I would say, that the Motion Drive Belt, has stretched to the point, that it is slipping on the pulleys. Over time all belts stretch or break. There is no adjustment, that can be made, once stretched, its time for a new belt. Look in your Owner's Manual,to see,a picture and directions of how to remove and replace a motion drive belt. If there isn't a picture of the drive belt in your manual, then look under the left foot rest. There you will find a decal, showing the correct method to install the belt over the pulleys. This is going to be a long belt,it runs from the Transaxle to the motor's upper pulley assembly. You can,it will be hard to do,remove and replace the drive belt with the mower deck attached. First, try lowering the mower deck,to the lowest position. This will give some room,to get to the motion belt, you will have to remove the mower belt,to get to the motion belt. I find it is easier to just remove the mower deck entirely. Doing this, give you ample room to work on the motion belt. The mower belt, can be purchased from Sears Parts Direct. Give them the tractor's Model Number and the Belt Part #,if you have the number, they will look it up anyway,if not. I gave more information, than you asked for. I hope this will help you. Sincerely,Brad Locke DTD. 12/04/15

Pullstart cable broke

Remove nuts mounting recoil assembly. Observe how rope is wound around pulley. Find end knot in pulley wheel. Cutoff end knot and remove old rope. Find end knot in handle, use needle nose pliers pull thru old rope. Rope is sold by the foot at mower repair shops. Replace rope as observed before removal. Cut to size after wrapping recoil assembly and attaching thru handle at proper length if at recoil assembly or on mower handle. Ensure good knot in hole of recoil assembly and handle.

I have a brand new TB250 21" self propelled mower with the Honda engine. I put it together, added oil, added gas, and when I go to start it it does not start. The issue is that I cant seem to get the...

Hi jb--
Since you have already added oil and gas, and this is a new mower, see if you can locate the 'dead man' switch on the mower. There should be a handle on the mower that must be held down when you try to start the mower. It will follow the shape of the larger handles, just about a third of the size: you can see it in the picture you used for this post. Attached to it is usually a cable that actuates a braking mechanism that will stop the mower's flywheel from turning. This handle will swing down against the handlebars of your mower before and then during normal operation. Try holding this safety down and try to pull again.
--Hope this helps.

STARTING ROPE BROKE AND UNABLE TO START MOWER

Hi,,,,replaceing the rope is easy, just takes sometime. first, take the cover off the engine. turn the cover over and rope pully should be right there. Measure out 8 foot of new rope. burn both ends of rope so it don't fray. get all of the old rope off the pully. here is where an extra pair of hands come in handy. by hand rotate the rope pulley 6 revolutions, now have someone hold the pulley, then feed rope thru the cover and thru the pulley rope opening, then tie a knot in that end, now slowly release the rope and it will wind itself onto pulley, now put rope thru the handle and tie knot, now put back togeather and go mow your lawn,,,lol

I have a 22 inche recycler toro push mower and the I have changed the sparkplug and there is fresh fuel in the mower but when im mowing it just shuts off why

There could be a problem with the "dead-man switch" and the wiring to it. When you release the "bail handle" on your mower, you have activated the switch. The wiring to it goes very close to the flywheel and is known to sometimes rub and go bare, thus grounding out the coil. Check the switch and wire from the switch to the coil. Make sure it is insulated (no chafing) and tucked away from the flywheel. Also, make sure the brass bolt that holds the float bowl on the carb has all its holes open as it is the main jet for the carb.Vibrations while running may be getting to the dead-man switch wiring etc.

I own a Craftsman rider, DTY 4000, 25 HP Kohler, 48" cut, 137 Hrs. It eats a belt about every mowing or two. Did all the stuff you did. Good luck from Sears. Had cousin who is owns a lawn & garden repair business look at it today. Says the prob. is this - The drive belt pulley (elec clutch) has too a narrow "V" and the angle of wear between it and the deck when the deck is in the lowered (mowing) position is too severe. If you notice with the deck in the fully raised position the pulleys line up perfectly. Then drop your deck and see how tightly bent the belt is downward and it makes sense as to why(my) belt would first roll over then break in a few minutes. The elec clutch pulley is sold as one unit PT No. 179334 $250.00, but I'm sure it would come with the same narrow V pulley. Waiting for word from my cousin. My last Sears Mower. Cannot even sell it in good faith.

The pull cord broke I just can figure out how to

1) Remove the recoil housing
**NOTE: normally you DO NOT need to remove the rotor pulley or spring to replace the rope.
This is the area that causes so many guys a lot of extra trouble!
2) Locate the string that is left and the hole it is threaded thru
3) Determine how much string has broken off of the rope that came out
*Note: if more than 1 inch is left, then the rope needs to be replaced
4) Obtained a length of rope appropriate for your engine, it is always better to have too much rope.
You can always shorten if it is too long.
Make sure both ends are melted to a point for easier threading thru handle and rope rotor
5) Wind the rotor in the direction of what the rope would pull,
(this will tighten the spring) until the spring is completely wound.
Remove 1/2 to 1 revolution.
6) Install the rope (with the handle installed on one end) thru the recoil housing and towards the rope rotor.
Tie a knot in the end of the rope, leaving a 3/8" tail free.
Then allow rope to wind onto the rotor until all rope is wound.
8) Pull the rope several times to position rope properly into rotor.
*note : there should be NO droop in the handle after released
9) When the unit is functioning proplerly, re-install housing onto engine.

Self propel always engaged

you may have lost the spring that pulls the transmission drive belt down or have the cable adjuster too tight.word of caution here, the cable goes thru the engagement lever and if you overtighten it the lever will crack or break. if it does the complete transmission will have to be replaced.seems they dont make the lever avalible seperate.
