A few thoughts have you tried to burn the disk using another application other than itunes. Have you tried a different disk or a different brand of disk? If the problem still exists it would rule out problems with the application and the disks. However it would probably mean that the disk drive is not working properly, you could try using a dvd head cleaner, but mac DVD drives do not have a great history with regards reliability. If it is still under warranty arrange an appointment at the genius bar at the local apple store and you will be able to get it replaced. The only other thing to do would be to purchase an external dvd drive, make sure it is mac compatible. Hope this helps.

Testimonial: "This advice was helpful and my options were to replace the internal disk drive (costly and the computer is already more than five years old) or purchase an external disk drive (less costly and the option I chose."

If you are prompted to insert a CD/DVD blank disc into the Burner, you must have the proper UNUSED CD or DVD blank disk. You must use the SIZE disc that corresponds to the Size of the Data to be burned. A CD is 700 Megs thus anything greater than 700 Megs needs a larger disc such as a DVD that is 4.7 Gigs. If the data you are trying to copy to a disc is over 4.7G you need a Dual Layer DVD or BluRay that accepts 25Gigs.

Have you used different brands of CD-R's and you got the same result - the disk isn't accepted? if yes then your optical unit is defective and must be replaced. Take your laptop to a repair shop , this is a big job that must be done by an experienced person.

Backing up your iTunes library to a CD or DVD To burn a CD (CD-R or CD-RW), your computer must have a compatible CD burner. To burn a DVD (DVD-R or DVD-RW), your computer must have a compatible DVD burner. Check in iTunes Preferences to see if a drive is compatible. See below for steps.
To create your backup disc
  1. Choose File > Library > Back up to Disc.
  2. Select the option you want from the resulting dialog and click Back Up.
  3. The two options you can select from are:
    • Back up entire iTunes library and playlists
    • Back up only iTunes Store purchases
    Whichever of these two options you choose, note that you can also choose "Only back up items added or changed since last backup" to perform an incremental backup.
  4. Insert a blank disc (CD or DVD) into your computer's optical drive. iTunes will scan the disc and begin burning.
  5. Note: If the disc you insert does not have enough space to hold all of the content you will be backing up, a dialog will appear asking whether you wish to backup to multiple discs. You can click Data Discs to continue.
iTunes burns the number of items that fit on one disc and then asks you to insert subsequent discs to continue burning the remaining files. Don't eject a disc while a backup is in progress.
Spoken programs purchased from the Audible.com website are not backed up.
Discs you create using the iTunes backup feature can be used only to restore; they can't be played in a CD or DVD player.

Restoring from a backup disc
  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Insert your backup disc.
  3. iTunes will ask whether you want to restore from this disc. Click Restore.
Check drive compatibility
  1. Choose a playlist on the left side of the iTunes window.
  2. Click the Burn Disc button on the bottom right corner of iTunes.
  3. If the drive is listed, it's compatible.

Does not recognize disk

Either:
* the disk you're inserting is not "empty" -- try it on a different computer;
* you should try a different manufacturer of "blank" disks;
* you need to upgrade the "firmware" inside your CD-writer, to recognize more brands of "blank" media;
* the CD-reader is malfunctioning -- when you "cancel" the burn-attempt, and insert a commercially-produced program CD or commercially-produced audio CD, can those disks be properly read?
* you have two CD/DVD devices in your computer, and you're inserting the "blank" disk into the "wrong" device.

Try
Memorex or Sony CD - R media and use the slowest Burn speed for the best results.
Good luck and let us know your result so we can provide alternate solutions if this doesn't Fixha?
