Question about Lexmark Z2420 Printer

I recently replaced both the black and the color cartridges but I'm still getting the message to replace the color cartridge. Please explain why this would happen and if i can fix it?

The problem could be due to a communication failure between the color cartridge and the All-In One (AIO) or by a short in the color cartridge. Here's what you can do:

  1. Try to re-seat the cartridges in the printer. Open the printer cover > remove the cartridges > close the printer cover > re-brick you printer by pulling out the power supply - black box behind the printer where the power cord is plugged in, and re-plug after 10 seconds. When the printer turns on, reinsert the cartridges and close the cover. Try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.
  2. Try to insert a different known working cartridge to identify if it's a faulty cartridge issue.
  3. Ensure that you are inserting original supplies. Refilled, re-manufactured or clone cartridges are not recommend for use with your printer. These are unreliable and tend to fail unexpectedly. If you're using genuine Lexmark cartridges yet it continues to fail, please contact the Lexmark Technical Support Center for further assistance.

for Lexmark x7170 ink cartridge is #32 and #33.
double check the number on the ink cartridge. and make sure to take the tape off the bottom of th eink cartridge before insert it in the cradle.
as far as the cleaning. there are contact pins in the ink cradle and on the bottom of the ink cartridge.
clean them using a coffee filter with little alcohol.

when you print black document the printer should only withdraw black ink,or you have go back to computer to tellthem print black and white, How? when you click print the screen will show out printer setting box ,you can find the option over there.

You may want to remove the power brick at the back of your printer, wait a few seconds and reinsert back. Then try the steps listed in the user guide to install new carts, page 42.

Ink cartriges have chips in them, if the printer does so many prints without getting the "I've had a new Original Cart fitted" it will stop untill,you give it one, regardless if there ink or not

Im afraid it doesn't care that you only need to use the colour cartridge, it is designed to cost you money and make money for lexmark not refillers.

Welcome to our modern world, manufactures make the ink hard to recycle by incorperation of expensive chips that makes refillers, unable to make a easy dollar, because if that want to make cartridges that work they must also fit the expensive chip.

All empty cartridges have a little ink left in them because getting air in ink lines is not a thing we want.

Please check if the cartridge is not dried out.

It will get dried out if you have not used that cartridge for certain period of time.

Try to replace the color Cartridge.

Sir, if you have installed Color Cartridge but if you are getting the message about not finding the color cartridge then its means Color Cartridge in not installed properly.
Please follow the following steps to install the cartridge again.

1. First of all Confirm that the printer is powered on.

2. Open the card slot cover and then the front cover. The cartridge holder moves to the replacement position.

3. Remove the cartridges.


Note: Handle the cartridges carefully to avoid staining clothes and surrounding work area.
4. Insert the cartridge into the cartridge holder.
Note: Push up the cartridge until it clicks into place.
6. Close the front cover. Wait until the preparatory operation is complete; it takes about one to two minutes.


Now check the printer again. If you still get this error message then it means the Cartridge you installed is not exactly proper, or if you think that u got this cartridge from the reliable source and it is proper and exactly fine cartridge then the problem is in the Print Head. You need to check it again.

INkCartrige error 50c. Will not print. Display this note each time I try to make copy or print from computer.


Hi there

You should always mention the printer model as well as what operating system you use.

This is what i found on LEXMARK's website about your error, and it seems you have one or 2 faulty cartridges, or you are using compatible cartridges instead of Lexmark Originals:

Problem Error messages; Error: "Cartridge Error 50C"; Cartridge error; Black cartridge missing; Color cartridge missing Solution Cartridge Error 50C
Your print cartridge has shorted.

  1. Power off your All-in-One and unplug it.

  2. Plug in your All-in-One again and turn it on.

  3. Uninstall and then reinstall your cartridges.

  4. If this does not resolve the issue, try the troubleshooting steps for the other cartridge errors below.

Error: Black Cartridge Missing
The black cartridge is not installed. (Install cartridge PN 82)
Error: Color Cartridge Missing
The color cartridge is not installed (Install cartridge PN 83)
Cartridge Error
Complete the following instructions:

  1. Power off your All-in-One.

  2. Use both hands to lift up the scanner unit until the scanner support holds it open.

  3. Turn the All-in-One on. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.

  4. Remove the color print cartridge.

  5. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.

  6. If the error message reappears, replace the black print cartridge with a new print cartridge.
    If it does not repeat steps 1-3 and then go to step 7.

  7. Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black print cartridge.

  8. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.

  9. If the error message occurs again, replace the color cartridge.

  10. If an error message reappears, repeat steps 1-3 and reinstall both print cartridges.

  11. Lower the scanner unit until it is completely closed.

  12. If you receive the error message again, replace both cartridges.

I have a HP Color Laserjet 2025. I recently replaced the color cartridges and when I tried to replace the black toner cartridge I got the message - "remove the shipping lock on the black toner...


My suggestion is to put the 2 cartridges next to each other and look at them as closely as you can. There has to be a difference between the one that works and the ones that give the error.
Something that just occurred to me. Check the slot where the black cartridge sits. Check it for something that could have fallen off the original cartridge and is wedged in the slot. Compare the slot with another cartridges slot.
Because one cartridge works and others don't, it tells me it's a physical(hardware) problem not electrical.

I have a dell all in one printer 944. When I turn it on it keeps sending the message, "change ink cartridge" I have changed the cartridge twice and message remains the same. Is it broken?


Are you using Dell Series 5 ink cartridges?

Please unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Now plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has. Now open the printer with the power on and the cartridges should go to the center to be replaced. Take out both Dell Series 5 ink cartridges and make sure the tape is off the cartridges and insert both back in and make sure the seat properly and latch. Close the printer and it should print an alignment page. If you still get the error message, please read bleow.

Black cartridge = black side(left side) Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Photo Cartridge = Black side(left side) Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It is also possible to get a new ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it to the place of purchase for a refund or a replacement one.

I keep getting a cartridge error message. I have replace the ink cartridges but still have the error.

Open the printer with the power on and remove the Dell Series 11 black ink cartridge and make sure the tape is off the cartridge, then reseat the cartridge back in. Now do the same for the Dell Series 11 color cartridge. Now when you close the printer, it should print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Photo = Black side(left side) Color = Color side(right side)

Hi there
Your error message is coming from the Dell Series 5 ink Cartridge. To reset the error message, unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer. Wait 60 seconds and then plug everything back in. This usually resets any error messages on the printer. Make sure the Dell Series 5 ink cartridges are intalled correctly by removing them and re-seating them .
Black in left or black side, color in right side or color side

If using a photo cartridge...
