How do I light the pilot light on my older Goodman heating and air unit?

The pilot light is off and we can't figure out how to light it because the directions are too faded. Can you please tell us how to light it?

Depending on how old the unit is , you turn the gas valve to pilot setting, hold down the button, light and hold for 1 min.

Have a goodman gas pack and we lost power due to winter storm over night so now my unit is running but only cold air coming out

the pilot light runs from a very small gas jet and should not be affected by the power outage
however that is not to say that the jet may have frozen over and become blocked putting out the pilot light
AS the system needs power to drive the fan it is possible that without the fan and safety system working , the main gas supply solenoid would have shut down and that could have affected the pilot light
with the power reinstalled try lighting the pilot light
I would say that there would be a pizo starter on the front of the unit to light the pilot loght

Goodman # GMS81155CNA light blinks 4 times - furnance won't light and blower runs all the time - it's cold - please help

Hi,
The 4 blinks means that the high limit switch or the regular limit switch are tripped... try to find the high limit switch... it is usually near the blower...there will be a red reset button in the center of it... push it in and the unit should work again...
if the regular limit switch is kicked you may have to replace it for the unit to work again...
This often happens after a power failure if the unit was running at the time of the failure. If you did not have a power failure, then find out why the limit switch kick out...

Here is a tip that will help you try to figure out why yourfurnace is not working.

I have a Goodman forced air heating system in my attic that's only about 3 years old and I believe the pilot light went out last night in a storm. My problem is that I can't locate the pilot in the unit...

Marc, look for where the gas line enters the furnace and remove the panel adjacent to it. That should gibe you access to the pilot light. Also, look for a pilot access door, near where the gas line enters the furnace. The gas line will either be 1/2" flexible copper tubing. 1/2" black iron pine or 1/2" vinyl coated flexible stainless steel. Look for the lighting instructions inside or on the side of the unit.

Hope this helps you solve the problem.

No flame

Several steps here to check...
turn power off unit and back on
set thermostat to heat
watch for pilot to ignite..igniter should glow orange or cherry red or spark if its a spark type ignitor
Did you see a pilot light ignite?

If not you probably have a bad igniter.

If pilot lit....in a little bit you hear a click of the gas valve opening..then the main burners will ignite

If you see the pilot and the main burner lights but goes out in a few minutes or immediately you may have an issue of the "high limit" switch tripping.

Is the blower fan turning that blows air out of your vents?
are all your vents open in your house? too many times i see homes with almost all vents shut.

Finding Pilot light on Goodman Model caf024a2a. Cannot seem to find the pilot light...The blower works but no heat.

i think the ca # is for the cooling coil unit - the heater should start with gmXXXXX - if your unit is fairly new - the pilot light electronically when thermostat calls for heat the unit will not light if the burner door is open

We have a Janitrol PGB 048125-1 unit and it is not blowing heat. the fan comes on when in fan only mode on thermostat but once we turn it to auto it goes off. we cannot get the unit to blow hot air. does...

If the unit is newer than 10 years I guess there will be no pilot light per sey. You will have to look at it to tell for sure. Here it is supposed to work. When there is a call for heat the thermostat will close and send a signal to the furnace to start the exhaust blower. When the blower gets up to speed, it closes a pressure switch that will send voltage to the gas valve and to the igniter. The igniter glows or sparks lighting the pilot. Once the pilot lights it sends a signal that all is well, then the gas valve opens up more and the burner(s) light. There is a sensor that tells the control board when the flame has stayed lit. Once that is done, after a period of time or as the heat exchanger gets to a specific temperature, it will turn on the room air blower and blow hot air. Once the thermostat has been satisfied, the furnace turns off. Now, get in front of the furnace and with the door panels off (you may need to tape down the door safety switch to make this work) watch the furnace go thru each step I described. Once you see where the problem is, you can start the proceed of repair. There may even be a flashing light indicating a problem. Find the wiring diagram on the furnace and look for a diagnostic chart and compare the number of blinks to this chart.

I have a Goodman air heat unit that will not come on.

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the ignitor. The ignitor will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the ignitor gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the ignitor does not energize (bad control, bad ignitor), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not lite (dirty pilot), the burner does not lite (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Most newer furnaces will have a diagnostic center or control built into the control module. You may be able to view it as it is running thru a small viewing port. Some models will require the removal of an access panel prior to finding it. On the reverse of the access panel, there will be a diagnostic chart that will aide you in understanding any error code recorded (usually a blinking light).
