Question about Kenmore 64802 Top Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Temperature My older refrigerator freezes my vegetables.I don't know why. I don't even know how to adjust the temperature dials. Please tell me which number on the dial represents colder or warmer? I don't know, for I got it second hand. The freezer works fine. It has a separate dial. I don't know how to co-ordinate the two dials. Could this be another problem unralated to how the dials are set? Is there a phone # I could call? Tatjana Johnston TatjanaMj@hotmail.com

Thank you for your advise. My freezer temperature was set at about 8, and kept things nice and frozen, but my fridge lately froze vegetables even set at 2. Someone said unplugging and letting my fridge sit to defrost all the lines for a day or two might help. Do you agree? I have done this. A little water drained from it. I plan on plugging it in again and setting the freezer temperature at a little lower. Would this help the fridge temperature be warmer? I intend to follow your advise and measure the fridge and freezer temperatures. If this works, I will have a good second fridge, since I ended up buying a new fridge a week ago. Lower numbers are warmer temps.  Get an outdoor thermometer and put it in the fridge.  It should read about 40 degrees F if you've left the door closed for an hour or so.  Don't worry about the freezer too much.  It should be at 0 F or so.  Generally, leaving the settings at 2 or 3 is right on most units.

How can I get into the cut-on settings of refrigerator

Hello,

Purchase an appliance thermometer that is specifically made for refrigerators and freezers. These special thermometers were made to withstand cold temperatures and provide an accurate reading when exposed to such temperatures.

2Place the appliance thermometer in a glass of water.

3Set the glass of water with the thermometer in the refrigerator on the middle shelf.

4Check the temperature on the appliance thermometer after 24 hours.
The temperature should register between 37 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (2 and 4 degrees Celsius) in order to store food safely.
Only barely above freezing -- say 34 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) is even better for food storage at the cost of slightly higher electricity consumption. But check that food is not slowly freezing in any part of the refrigerator, which could make it less palatable.

5Look for the temperature control dial inside the refrigerator if you have to adjust the temperature, and make it warmer or cooler.
If you can't easily see the control dial, check the owner's manual for a diagram that shows the location.
When looking at the refrigerator temperature dial, you may see numbers rather than degrees. The majority of refrigerators use a set of numbers, with the lower numbers representing cooler temperatures and the higher numbers representing warmer temperatures.

6Move the temperature dial in the necessary direction to adjust the temperature up or down. Be sure to move the dial only one number in either direction because it probably will not take much to change the temperature in the refrigerator.

7Adjust the temperature balance control if your refrigerator has such a dial or sliding switch. This allows you to direct more or less cold air to the refrigerator section from the freezer section.

8Wait at least 24 hours, and then check the refrigerator temperature again.

9Observe the amount of frost in the freezer section of the refrigerator if you are unable to properly set the temperature.

10Defrost the freezer if the amount of frost is more than .25 inches (.64 cm) thick.

11Repeat the steps as necessary until the temperature is within the safe range.

12Use a permanent marker to draw a line on the dial after you locate the best setting on the refrigerator temperature dial. This will give you a reference point in case your dial moves and needs to be adjusted in the future.

Hope this help in solving the problem....

Our Amana AF12538 AE Refrigerator is causing the vegetables in the vegetable bin to freeze. What could cause this? the Units is only 2 years old.

Refrigerator temperature control set too cold or faulty Fresh Food thermistor.

Adjust refrigerator temperature control or check thermistor.

1 Refrigerator section too cold
2 Refrigerator airflow not properly adjusted
3 Check air flow.

The lettuce freezes even when we dial the control to 45 degrees. Please help

#1 Does your lettuce freeze in the crisper drawer? If so this would be your thermistor located behind the temperature control knob. At the very top inside the top cover is where it is located. It looks like a device with a wire covered in plastic that reads your temperature and allows your refrigerator to cool evenly. If your lettuce is not in the crisper drawer than this can also freeze your vegetables and dry them out. I hope I helped you.

Vegetables are freezing inside vegetable bin

Most likely your refrigerator is set at too cold a setting. Just turn the temperature adjustment to a warmer setting.

You have 2 dials in the refrigerator. One is the thermostat setting the cold temp in the freezer, the other is a damper that allows cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator. Set the thermostat to the middle then try closing down the damper, most say colder or warmer refrigerator. If the damper is closed and your refrigerator is still freezing, then I would guess that the thermostat is bad. A thermostat runs about 40 to 60 dollars wholesale. Retale should be about double.
