Back up is always a must. After back up you may want to revert to older time and see if th eproblem persists. If yes then use your recovery CD and recover your system fresh. If the problem still exists then you may have to replace the hard drive. Try the same make and model to save yourself a hstle of driver issues. Once you replace the HDD recover from the provided recovery disk

I got this massig: smart failure predicted on hard disk : Toshiba MK50555GSX-(S1) Warning: Immediately beck up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure my be imminent. press F1 to cntinue.

This is clearly an indication of a hard drive failure. Though your system may still be booting up it is highly likely that it will stop very soon. Back up your files to a different file location (e.g. external hard drive, online backup) before it happens. Replace the hard drive and seek computer's manufacturer if system is still under warranty, otherwise simple buy a replacement hd from staples or best buy and seek technical assistance if you can't replace it on your own. Hope this helps!

Desktop will not start.. will only go through Chkdsk

Try and tap F8 and see if you can boot to safe mode and go to my computer and rt click on C, and pick properties then tools, then
check for errors, and check auto, and scan.

Go to if you don't know who made the hard drive in your model. Then go to the mfg of the hard drive and download a hard drive diagnostic disk to check your hard drive for bad sectors.

You should go to and check your warranty and you can also ask dell what you should do.

This link posted below has a lot of drive mfg diagnostic tools.

Hard Drive Clicking - Intermittently works

Hi Jackbox

Generally a clicking sound coming from your hard drive is called the click of death which is a good indication the drive will crash very soon and will not start up. So my advice is "BACKUP YOUR HARD DRIVE!" as soon as possible. Because if the drive fails, you will be out of luck. Backup, Backup.

Here is a couple of things to do to check
Scan Your Drive On Windows XP, you can check your hard drive for errors by running the CHKDSK utility. Restart your computer and hold down the Ctrl key while it's booting up. When you see the option to start your system in Safe Mode, select it and continue. Click the Start button, then click Run, then type CHKDSK C: /F /R then press Enter. The /R option tells CHKDSK to scan for bad disk sectors, and the /F option means to fix any errors found. (On a Windows 98 system, use the SCANDISK command instead of CHKDSK.)
If CHKDSK offers to "convert lost chains to files", recover lost data, or fix something else, you should accept. After CHKDSK finishes, restart your computer normally and see if the dreaded click of doom returns. If so, the drive is most likely damaged, and should be replaced as soon as possible. Backup those files
Are You On The Level? Some hard drives are very sensitive to non-level surfaces, and will not function properly if they're sitting on a slant. Shut down your computer, make sure your system unit is on a flat surface (use a level to make sure), and then restart.

Sorry can not tell you more but besides backup the files and the bad part your harddrive is most likely on the way out.

Hard drive is "full" though I only have 186G on it

hereĀ“s a thought! You can try running chkdsk cause maybe your freespace is being reported incorrectly! Open command prompt: Go to Start->Run then type cmd and press enter Run the chkdsk utility: where x is the drive letter of the removable drive at the prompt type chkdsk x: /f and press enter now windows will scan for filesystem errors and fix any if found. Also on another note, items in your recycle bin count towards the amount of used space! hope this helps regards, babb
