Have started having the red gun distort at random. it will work for about 10 mins and then start flickering a large curved distortion in just the red information. have seen people with problem, but no true repairs/solutions on this site. please advise. thanks for your time and help. please reply at email@example.com
Same sort of problem here. My red looks like it's pinched in the middle and is curving inward. The whole picture looks like you should have 3-D glasses. I've heard it's a problem with a convergence chip, but I have no clue how much that will cost to have someone come fix and we live in a rural area in MO. I'm sure that will jack up the price. Mine is only about 4 years old, I wonder how much I could sell it for (as is) and buy a new TV.

You have a bad video board. If you can find one used it is fairly easy to replace once you get into the TV itself. Your color guns could also be adding to this problem. I am not familiar with this television and its components so I dont know if you can replace one color gun at a time or if once one is shot then all three have to be replaced. That should be a start for you anyway.
Ur convergence is dead. These problems are colors misalines,3D pictures, colors distorted.U know how to solders?Must replaced 2 convergence ICS,and some or all it resistors.Buy a convergence kit at Tv repair World.com,Tvrepairkits.com to repair it ur self. The shop will cost U $300 for parts and labors.
You said it is Distorting, If the distortion looks "3d" or separate red or green or blue images. You may have a bad solder connection on the convergence ic's they are located on a large heat sink the part number on the ic will begin with STK392- ??? there will be two of them and the pins will need re-soldered, or the part will have to be replaced. If you even just solder the pins it is a good idea to check and see if the heat sink compound has hardened it is a white grease between the heat sink and the component, if this has turned hard it needs replaced. If soldering does not fix the problem these ic's could still be bad, and need changed, but before i would do this i would tap on the chassis with the but of my screwdriver to see if the picture flickers. This being done with the set on and many dangerous voltages present. Soldering the chassis of course with the set unplugged.
I don't recommend doing this repair yourself because of the dangers involved with electrical shock even with the tv unplugged. If you called a serviceman the repair might run around $300.00.
There may be several causes but, one is that when any color gun is being over driven, the Sony shuts down the gun to protect it. Try this. Remove the front of the set by removing the two screws from each lower corner. Next remove the black panel held on by 5 or 6 screws. Now you should see a panel with 6 potentiometers on it. Turning the ones on the bottom row CCW reduces the drive. Turn the color down and if all the guns stay lit, SLOWLY turn them up until you get the color balance that you like.
