As long as everything is working it's ok,all it is is a safety switch so the washer won't run with the lid open,a kid could open the lid when it's spinning and it won't shut down and if the kid sticks his or her hand or arm inside it could get ugly so it's a safety switch that's it.

SOURCE: replacing lid switch on Kenmore 80 series washing machine

It's attached under the top panel but depending on the year of manufacture it could be on the right, below a hole where the strike comes down or on the left rear under the console.

The washing machine will not spin?

There are many possibilities for this problem, but the most common and regular problem seen is as follows:--
There is a lid switch in the washer. The washing machine will not start spinning till the lid is closed. In some cases it has been seen that lid is closed still the washer does not spin. in this cases the lid switch has to be checked. if the lid switch is faulty then the closed lid will not be detected by the washing machine, and it will not start spin cycle.
This will help. Thanks.

Spin cycle doesn't work on washing machine

If this is a top loader then check the lid switch. A common failure is the lid switch fails.

Inspect the lid to make sure the plastic component "Lid Switch Actuator" Has not broken off from the lid. The actuator protrudes through the hole identified by the red arrow above and actuates the switch. A quick check is to listen for a distinct click as the lid closes.

No click no spin. With click if switch bad no spin. A qualified technician needs to replace the switch if bad. The lid removes easily of course power must be off by unplugging the washing machine.

Washing machine top loader aqua smart the lid cannot lock while washing. I have tried switching the machine on and off, still won't work. This happened a little while ago but then is rectified i

Is the lid lock tang on the lid ok & not broken.
You need to jam the lid lock lever in the lid lock down for it to do a wash.
This is where your lid lock is

Why wont my philco washing machine drain or spin

Many washing machines won't spin or drain if the lid isn't closed. It could be that the switch detecting the lid close position isn't working or the tang that presses the switch isn't depressing the switch enough. Check to see if the lid is closing all the way, if so, then locate lid close switch and pressing on the switch with a Q-tip. If other functions stop when the lid is opened and work when the lid is closed then you have another problem. The problem could be in the wash cycle switch, try spin and rinse all the different settings.

Lid will not open

Hello,
It means your lid switch is defective. If the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. To determine if the lid switch has failed, watch this videos below.
http://www.repairclinic.com/Washing-Machine-Troubleshooting#repairHelpVideoTabs Some machines have a special lid-switch fuse near the lid switch, inside the control panel. If this fuse blows, the unit won't fill with water until you replace the fuse.
Thanks

My Kenmore 22712 Top load will agitate, but when it switches to the spin cycle I get nothing. The motor wont run and the tub doesn't spin.

open the lid a lttle and close it down a few times,if you don't hear a clicking sound when it closes you have a bad lid switch,or open the lid and stick a screw driver in the hole where the piece on the lid goes down into when the lid is closed, if it doesn't click and the machine doesn't run then the lid switch is bad.,they don't want the machine to run with the lid open when it goes into the spin cycle,if you send the full model number located beneath the lid when it's open on the back panel under the lid.let me know how you make out

Water is now filling, washing going round in drum but not rinsing or spinning.

Spinning and Rinsing require a safety switch to be enabled by the closing of the washers lid.

Check around your lid and washer lid opening to find the mechanism that is used to activate the safety switch mounted just under the lid opening inside your machine. Sometimes it is a plastic plunger(protrusion) on the lid that mates with and opening(hole) in the machine around the lid opening to cause this switch to close. Other times it is on the hinge side of the
lid and the protrusion is formed right into the metal of the lid itself to push a plunger on the hinge side to close this safety switch.

Most spinning problems on machines are cause by this lid safety switch. Washing machines cannot spin if the lid is not closed and this safety switch is not working to switch power to the spinning motor.
