Just open up the side pannel of the pc then find the hard drive unplug it from both cables the power and the data cable then put the new one in same as the old one came out *be sure to make sure the jumper is in the correct setting ex. single or master* then just start up the computer and put the restore cd into the cd drive and it should work fine after the setup is complete.

if the hard drive is broken you can not - replace the drive. if the drive works as normal, then just use a windows installation disk or recovery disk.

Hard drive noises usually indicate a mechanical failure. Call dell and have them resolve the issue with a replacement drive.

The hard drive on my 4520 went down, and now I am having problems re-installing a windows system, and I have no recovery files, as the I realized that the recovery was on the hard drive that went down. Is...

if you have replaced the hard drive then you really don't need a recovery partition. if you are using the same hard drive you may need to replace it because of the fact that it is dead. if you have a new hard drive and can't get it to install windows it may not be the hard drive that is bad it may be the ide controller on the motherboard.

I have a gateway Profile 5. when i cut it on

My understanding is that when you power on your PC, the POST is succesful, but then the system hangs.? If i am correct. There are several reasons this may happen.

1) Boot record corrupt
S) Reformat the harddrive and re-install operating system / replace hard drive

2) General Hard drive failure but boot record instact
S) Replace Hard drive

3) Operating system inoperative
S) Re-install operating system

Most pre-built systems come with recovery disks, you may try this as a solution if available.

When replacing a defective hard drive, or partialy inoperable hard drive, a good policy is to change the drive to slave, and install the new drive as master, this way any data you may be able to recover, can be done after the new hard drive is installed, and an operating system is installed on the new drive.

(POST = Power On Self Test)

Start up problem

This generally indicates a hard drive failure. You can try to do an operating system repair with the recovery or operating system disc, but most likely you will need to replace the hard drive.

When you see the IBM screen you need to enter the boot menu. On this screen it tells you what to press to get to the boot menu. Place the recovery or operating system disc in the drive, and select the CD drive from the boot menu, then follow the directions. If the repair doesn't work, then reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system. If you have any issues during or after the format or install, then the hard drive has failed and will need replaced. You want to do a full NTFS format, not the quick format, if the hard drive is bad, it won't format.

Hard drive replacement w/system restore disc

After installing the new hard drive, you'll need to boot the computer from the recovery disk and follow the instructions to format the drive and install windows. You'll also need to install drivers from the driver disk after Windows is up and running. If the computer won't boot from the recovery disk, you'll need to access the "setup" utility and set the CDROM drive as the first boot device. To access the setup utility, press the Delete key after turning on the power. I hope this helps!
