As stated the hard drive is failing and there is no way to fix a clicking hard drive. you will need to contact the vendor that you brought it from or the manufacturer for a warranty/rma

Your hard drive has the click of death. you will need to contact a data recover center if you really need to recover any vital data.

SOURCE: SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB Power up problem

It could be that it's internal power supply burnt out,
in which case the drive itself could still be fine.

Try opening up the external case, and removing the drive.
Once you do, plug it in to your computer directly using its SATA cables, and see if that works.

Hope I helped,
Tom

SOURCE: SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 320GB, I

http://www.hitachigst.com/support/index-files/simpletech-legacy-downloads. I am unsure which SimpleDrive version you have, but if it's the regular (not deluxe, mini, or 3.0), it should be the first driver on that page, assuming that Windows XP doesn't install the drivers itself when you plug it in.

How do you get rid of data on the external hard drive.

Go to My Computer, right click the external drive, cilck open. That will show the contents of the drive. Once you are happy that you wish to delete all the files click Edit/select all right click delete.

Or right click on the drive and select format.

Here clicking sound when powering up.

Clicking noises are not uncommon for hard drives, though it is really difficult to tell. I have drives that made no clicking noises just stop working, and I have a clicking Western Digital that has been chugging along for over 5 years now. If those clicks lead into grating metal on metal sounds, you need to back up that disk.
