Hi I have an AEG PF 1800 which has hardly been used, I've oiled and replaced needles, thread etc. but the part where the small bobbin is insered is not rotating at all hence the feeder feet are no

Initially the machine stopped stitching, then the thread was very loopy, finally the bobbin in the bottom now refuses to rotate which has resulted in the needle going well but nothing else is happening. Thanks Heather

A few suggestions:

  1. Rethread top of machine from scratch with the presser foot raised, i.e. remove thread completely from all thread guides & paths and start from scratch, making sure thread is securely seated between tension disks. Once the needle is re-threaded, lower the presser foot and give the tail end of the thread a tug to make sure there's tension on it.
  2. Make sure the bobbin is turning the correct direction for your machine - and that the thread tail is under the tension plate or bobbin tension guide (depending on machine).
  3. Blow out any fuzz.
  4. Insert a new needle, making sure needle is pushed all the way up.
  5. Oil machine (in locations recommended in your owner's manual).
If the basic cleaning and re-threading (above) don't help, your machine(s) may be out of time or have another mechanical issue that will require a repair technician. We recommend a tech trained on your specific brands - they'll be better trained and able to get any repair parts that may be needed.

Rule of thumb.. Loops on the bottom, problem on the top. Loops on the top, problems on the bottom.

Set your upper tension at 4, and rethread the machine from the top. Just before you thread the needle, but the presser foot down. If the thread pulls right thru easily, then the thread is not thru the tension wheel right. Because, if you can't pull the thread thru with the presser foot down, you have it threaded right.

Please TRY the solution BEFORE giving your considered rating.
Specific detail on bobbin case adjustment (with picture) near halfway down reply, the remainder will help you achieve a balance of top and bottom tensions.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely cause....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.

The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle,
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your projects).

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension.

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits)

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned.

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is,
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover !

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistent diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.

10000 janome jamming fly wheel won't turn


I would replace the needle anyway. It's hard to tell if one is bent or not.

Remove your feed dog/needle plate and the bobbin cover. Take out your bobbin and bobbin carrier.

Get out a magnifying glass and really examine. Look for thread ends in between moving parts.

Also check the thread pathways. Especially where the take up lever is hidden. I've heard of some ladies finding threads snarled up in that area which caused problems like this.

Good luck. If all else fails take it in for repair.

First change that needle. It's likely bent. A bent needle won't create a stitch.

Then double check your timing. It sounds like you have it ******** a bit... But that's hard to determine from a description. Before you start the timing process, make sure that your needle bar is in the correct position. (typically the upper timing mark on the needle bar is just below the lower needle bar guide when the needle is at its very lowest point) If necessary loosen the needle bar holder and make a correction. Once the needle bar is positioned correctly... then move on to the shuttle/needle timing.

Almost every time this will be due to the machine being not threaded correctly. I've been sewing for 45 years and still mis-thread my machine occasionally. It's also possible that the bobbin thread didn't seat quite right when you put in the bobbin. Or, I've had mine do that if I didn't quite get the presser foot lever down completely. (working with heavy fabrics usually)

If that is not the case here, try replacing your needle with a new one, as it might have developed a small burr, and be certain that it's the correct needle for the fabric. Sometimes it can also be that the needle is in backwards. Also, cleaning it, (the bobbin area), out thoroughly by using a soft brush and some canned air can do wonders for it. Then use a drop or two of sewing machine oil where your manual indicates it to go in that area.

If none of that fixes the problem, let me know and I'll see if there is a problem specific to your machine that can happen.

Janome 3000 bobbin thread will not catch. It just quit while I was sewing. I've cleaned the bobbin case and anything else I could but when I put the needle down the thread does not circle the b


try changing the needle
rethread the machine top & bobbin
make sure to use every thread guide
make sure the bobbin is not over wound
make sure the bobbin is turned the right way in the bobbin case
make sure the bobbin is not warped or damaged
if you've done all these things then it's also possible that the machine
is out of time & needs to be checked at a repair shop

Remove bobbin, presser foot, needle. Tip machine back on towel gently. Unscrew plate--don't lose screws! Do not service in presence of children and curious pets. Put foot pedal next to you on tabletop. Use Zoom Sewing Machine oil. Any part MOVING that are NOT gears get one drop oil. Any DRY ONLY gears get dab of Singer sewing machine lubricant. Replace screws. Secure screws. Open left front compartment & one drop oil @ top of needle bar. Open race shuttle (where bobbin case fits in). One-half drop oil of on oscillating hook (bottom left - hand corner...smear that oil around! Insert NEW needle all way UP in needle bar groove, flat needle shank toward back. Turn handwheel towards you and raise. Raise presser foot so that threading locates all tension slots a's you pull thread TAUT from spool to each tension slot and left to right through silver, metal take-up lever, and down to tension bracket, pass needle, then pull 6" thread towards you and thread from FRONT to BACK of needle. Place bobbin into case and "thread" it. Set presser foot on DOWN position. Turn handwh towards you, dipping needle into needle plate. Make loop with bobbin thread, pull towards you. Place a good 7" underneath presser foot (both threads). Let machine RUN on 24" scrap to distrubute oil/lube. That's it! Jimmy

Putting oil in my sewing machine


Take out the bobbin and then release the hook retainer (black plastic part that the bobbin goes into), but pressing the catch on the inside left-hand-side of the bobbin door. The hook retainer should then drop and the hook can be taken out. Clean around the inside of the hook race (the circular metal part of the chassis that the hook fits in) using a cotton bud and make sure that the small groove that runs around the inside of the hook race is completely clean. Take your oil dropper and put a single drop of oil at the bottom of the hook race - you should see it 'wick' around the groove slightly - this tells you you've put it in the right place. Replace the hook, making sure its properly seated and press the hook retainer back into place firmly until the catch on the left clicks. Rotate the handwheel once to ensure that the oil is distributed and replace the bobbin. You're advised to make sure the needl is returned to the correct position for the automatic threader to work, either by pressing the needle up/down button twice or dabbing the foot controller so a complete revolution is done by the machine. You should oil the hook race every 3-5 bobbins-worth of thread. Hope that helps.

My thread keeps breaking at the end of my sewing session. not sure why, I've been sewing blocks for a quilt and I've tried to change the thread


Upper thread breaks
1.needle may be in backwards
Correct needle insertion
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine or if using a round needle--the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft.
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
2.upper tension may be to tight--try 3 to 5
3.the needle may be bent or damaged--try rolling the needle on a flat surface to see if it's bent or not
4.thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint

Lower thread breaks
The most probable cause of lower thread breaking is improperly wound bobbin
1.always start with a empty bobbin
Never wind one color over the other
2.choose thread that is identical in color & type as the one to be used for upper threading
3.wind the bobbin evenly across & in layers
4.don't wind the bobbin so full that it would be tight & hard to insert into bobbin case
5.bent bobbin--replace
6.lint built up in the bobbin case--frequent cleanings will eliminate this problem, the more often you use the sewing machine the more often it needs to be cleaned
7.thread catching on the bobbin spring or latch on bobbin case, check to see that the bobbin is inserted completely & correctly, & that you are using the right kind of bobbin .

My Activa 130 makes a clacking sound when I sew. It is 10 years old. What do you think is wrong? Can I repair this or do I need to take it to be serviced?


I would take it to a Bernina repairman, nice machine and well worth getting it serviced by a qualified technician.

I presume that you've tried the obvious things like a new needle and checking the bobbin case is in correctly.

When threading my Viking sewing machine., the needle won't pick up the thread. I.ve used it 15 years. This is the 1st time this happened. Help...


Do you mean it wont pick up the bobbin thread? You need to get into the user's manual on removing the bobbin shuttle that the bobbin holder clips into (actually pretty easy, I clean ours yearly especially if fuzzy material like velour is sewn) and brush the fixed area out that the bobbin shuttle floats in then reassemble and test. Also remove the throat plate/needle plate and you'll find that fuzz/lint gets between the plat and the feed dogs keeping the dogs from coming up fully.

Also if thread breaks one thing to look for if you've had needles break is a burr around the oval opening in the plate where the needle goes into it. Small Swiss file takes care of the burr and no more burr to break/cut the threads.

On rare occasions you may find the actual bobbin carrier (the one that holds the bobbin and is clipped into the machine) gets worn and wont stay clipped into the shuttle that holds it. Replacing the bobbin carrier is needed then. A1 Sewing on the net carries parts for the #1, #1+ etc.
