SOURCE: no driver for mp3 player
The problem here is that while Win98 has basic USB support it does not implement the full specification - in particular it has no generic mass storage driver support. realizing this, most manufacturers used to supply specific drivers for their own devices, however anything made/sold much after 2000 assumes you will have XP (which has implemented the full spec, as have OSX and Linux) and simply list XP as a requirement (even though it isn't).
Although Microsoft (who want you to buy their newer product) will never supply these drivers, free third party alternatives are available (such as here).
This will allow connection of any MP3 player, Digital camera, Flash USB drive, External USB harddrive, CD/DVD drive or most any other USB device with storage.
For this to work properly any proprietary USB storage drivers should be removed (first preferably, or you'll have to troubleshoot removing them when the associated devices have problems later, but the generic version will work as well) .
For some devices (such as the Sandisk Sansa E250) you may have to set the style of USB from the device (to MSC from MTP in the case of the E250).
When the USB device is plugged in the first time it will ask where to look for drivers, the driver install above will put the necessary CAB files in your windows' directory in a folder called "OPTIONS\CABS" ... One removable "drive" will be installed for each data source (in the case of the E250 there will be 2 - one for the built-in storage and one for the SD-card expansion slot).

Dude, that means you need to hook it up, take all the music off of it (and the memory card if u have 1) and put all the music back on. It says that in the Manualand on the box you buy it in!
