I get the err message intermittently, shutter locks up, and I have to press shutter again for it to advance. No picture gets taken when I get the err message and shutter stays up.

Could be many different issues.
What camera is it?
When you put a lens on it, is the view finder quite dark?

I bought a second hand Mamiya 645 Af but as soon as I load a film it shows a error message ERR 01 .... what is that ?

From the manual:
"If the error display is not canceled when the shutter release button is pressed again, insert the Dark slide, half-press the shutter release button while pressing the roll film holder's manual film advance button to wind up the film, then contact your nearest Mamiya agent or service center."

What does the E mean on the screen.I put a new film in at Xmas time and only took a few pictures when the E showed up and couldn't click the picture. took to camera shop replaced batteries and film ...

If you go to http://www.pentaximaging.com/support/manuals-and-literature/ you can find the manual for your camera. From my experience the E on a Pentax camera means the film isn't loaded properly. Hope this helps.

How do you know if there is film in the camera and if so how do you know how many pictures are left to be taken .

I haven't heard of this camera, but most film cameras have a display somewhere that will show you how many have been taken. They don't usually show how many are left because film rolls can have anywhere from 12-36 pictures on them. If you are unsure about how many the roll of film had, you should assume it was a 24 exposure roll. 24 is the most common. If it doesn't have a number anywhere that you can see, you should take pictures until it stops winding.

If the film has been in the camera for a long time, it's probably better to just unload it and have it developed anyway. Film goes stale after a year or so for most films, so you may not have any good pictures on it anyway.

Hope this helps, if not make a comment with more information and I'll see if I can find a manual online for your camera. I'll need model number and as much more info as you can give.

Thanks

Black screen

Not to worry, this a very simple problem. Your display is set to off. All you need do is set it back on. And this is how you will do it.
To the right of your screen where you have your buttons, look for the display button. Below it is usually labeled DISP. Press this button again and again and watch as the screen display changes. At one of those instances it goes blank/off, but at the others it displays the view in deferent manners. Stop at any of those display options where it shows the view.

F--

Unlike other cameras that start at frame #1 after loading and count up as the film is used, the N55 advance the film to the last frame during the loading process. When loading is complete, the frame counter stops at the number of available frames on the roll (usually 24 or 36) and counts down as photos are taken. I know it sounds backwards but it actually makes a lot of sense to engineer it this way. After the last photo is taken (displays 1 on the counter), the camera automatically winds the end of the film into the cassette and the counter shows a blinking E. I am assuming that that is what is being displayed and not a blinking F. it it is an F, perhaps there is a problem with the LCD display? If so, it probably isn't worth having it repaired.

Problems with camera display on kodak APS (something or other......)

I am having exactly the same problem (I have a T550). On the last film I shot, the only way to advance the film was to pull the battery out and re-insert it every time. When I printed that film, all the frames are blank! Kodak's FAQ about "clearing the logic" suggests a solution for that problem. 1. Turn camera off 2. Pull battery out 3. Turn camera on 4. Click the shutter approximately 6 times 5. Turn camer off 6. Repeat step 4 7. Reinstall battery I just tried that but the problem persists. I am now going to leave the battery out for several hours; maybe this will help. Otherwise, well it is time to bite the bullet and buy a digital !
