Question about Heating & Cooling

Gas adjustment. I have 2 screws inside my furnace on the gas control box. both screw out and leave ajustmentscrews inside. one of them is for the pilot light and the other one i have no clue. I think it is for gas pressure but how do I adjust it??? My furnace is a AMANA AIR COMMAND GH SERIES HIGHBOY. THANKS!!!

How to adjust pilot lite on a furnace


Select thermostat to off. Take front upper panel off of furnace. Looking at gas valve you should see a flat head or straight slot screw. This is the cap to access the adjustment. Look at the body of the gas valve real close. You may need to put on your glasses or use magnifying glass. It should say pilot in very small raised letters. Remove the cap. Look down into access hole and you will see the adjustment screw. It is a nylon screw so be careful not to strip it out. Place the correct screw driver, should be a small phillips or straight head. Turn gas valve to pilot and depress. Light pilot. While holding down, adjust nylon screw clockwise until flame envelopes 3/8 to 1/2 inch around thermocouple. Replace cap. Select heat and verify pilot stays lit. If the flame doesn't stay lit most likely your thermocouple is defective. You can purchase at your local hardware or Home Depot. Length doesn't matter.The thermocouple is heated and sends a DC signal back to the gas valve. There is another screw cap on the gas valve that adjusts gas pressure. Do not try to adjust the gas pressure to the gas valve because you need a special instrument (manometer) to adjust pressure. This device measures the water colume of the gas. A qualified technician would adjust this to 3.5" WC. for natural gas or 11" for propane.

Convert coleman furnace model# 7956B856 Serial# 039167560 from propane to natural gas . What do I do to the gas valve and what size orifice do I need ( or drill size to drill the propane orifice out ) .


You will need to get a natural gas conversion kit for your equipment. It will include around three different orifice sizes depending on elevation. Never drill orifices yourself as this is a gas appliance and could kill you. You will have to remove your gas manifold and unthread the existing orifices and screw in the new ones. As far as the gas valve you will need to unscrew and remove the adjustment screw and change the spring located underneath and reassemble. Once changed out you will need to check the manufacturers name plate and adjust the manifold pressure using a manometer. If this is not done having incorrect gas pressure can cause delayed ignition, overheating of the heat exchanger or high carbon monoxide levels. The conversion kit is inexpensive and should take less than an hour to do

My heil furnance comes on but no hot air or air at all

o light the pilot on a standing-pilot (always on) ignition system, follow the lighting instructions located near the control. Otherwise, try these steps: Light the pilot:
  1. gasfurnace1.jpg Press and hold the pilot control knob to start the pilot. Set the control knob to the pilot position. Hold a long match under the pilot gas port.
  2. Press the control knob; the pilot should light. Hold the control knob down until the flame is burning brightly (about 30 seconds). Release pressure on the knob, and turn it to the on position.
  3. If the pilot goes out when you release the control knob, try relighting, holding the control knob down longer. If the pilot again goes out, check the thermocouple (below).
Adjust the pilot:
  1. Remove any cap covering the pilot adjusting screw on a combination control.
  2. Turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise to increase the flame or clockwise to decrease it. It is correctly adjusted when the flame envelops the thermocouple bulb by 1/2 inch and appears dark blue with a small yellow tip.
Test and replace a thermocouple:
  1. Hold the control knob to pilot and light the pilot as above.
  2. Unscrew the thermocouple fitting with an open-ended wrench.
  3. Set a multimeter to the DVC (lowest voltage) scale.
  4. Clip one multimeter lead to the end of the thermocouple tube nearest the pilot and the other lead to the fitting on the other end of the tube.
  5. If the multimeter shows a reading besides zero, the thermocouple is functioning. Replace the thermocouple tube.
  6. If there is no reading, you will need to clean or replace the thermocouple following steps 7 through 11.
  7. Release the control knob and shut off the main gas valve on the gas-supply pipe that leads into the burner. Shut off power to the burner at the electrical service panel .
  8. Remove the thermocouple from its mounting bracket.
  9. Wipe the combination control clean and install a new thermocouple, tightening it by hand, then give it a one-quarter turn with a wrench.
  10. Insert the thermocouple into the pilot bracket, being careful to not crimp the tubing.
  11. Turn on power to the furnace and relight the pilot (above).
Adjust an adjustable burner air shutter:
  1. Set the thermostat to its highest setting to keep the burner running. Once the furnace has heated up, remove the burner access panel and loosen the locking screw.
  2. Open the shutter by turning it to the right until the blue base of the flame appears to lift slightly from the burner port surface. Then close the shutter until the flame reseats itself on the surface.
Clean removable burner tubes and ports:
  1. Shut off gas and power to the furnace.
  2. Unscrew or loosen and remove the tubes from the supporting bracket.
  3. Carefully clean the tubes with a brush or vacuum, making sure not to damage the burner ports.
  4. Use a stiff wire to clear any debris from clogged ports.

Pilot runs gas valve clicks but no ignition dayton 3e226c


There is a small Allen head screw in the gas valve that can be removed to test for gas after the gas valve. When the gas valve opens, gas should be present at that port. If none, you have a bad gas valve. If you gas gas, then there must be a restriction at the main burner.

Furnace turnoff just before the blower go on.


You are to be commended for noticing this sequencing of events-- Good observation!

You need to adjust the Plenum control switch. (Or fan control switch)

Usually at the top front of the furnace, is a Fan control switch--
It is called the Plenum switch-- and it senses the temperature of the Air being heated by the fuel--
(Is your furnace Oil or gas?-- if Gas-- is it LP or Natural?)

This switch Has a cover that can be removed-- inside is a round dial, with some adjusting screw, and Degrees stamped on the perimeter of this round dial.
You can take the cover off, while the furnace is running-- (Just do not touch the screw terminals that have electric power to them--
You can rotate this dial, and it will turn the fan on-- (Or if the trip levers are mis-adjusted-- it might shut off the burner-- just rotate back the other way, and it will re-light etc.--
The purpose of this control is to make sure your fan is not blowing COLD air.
So-- lower the 'ON' switch tripper, down lower, so the fan will turn on sooner.
You may have to loosen a set-screw-- but usually they are just friction held-- and can be forced to slide (rotating CCW) to the lower temperature setting.
(If you get it too low, it will be blowing cooler air than you like at the registers.)

However-- to get the most heat from your furnace energy source-- you want the fan to come on as early as you can tolerate-- That will be delivering HEAT to your occupied space sooner, and giving yo more of those dollars you are spending on fuel, in the orm of heat in your house!

mcdevito75 here, The fast idle is needed when the engine is cold to make the air and fuel mixture rich to keep the engine running while cold, the carb. choke doew this with a bi-metalic spring in that balck round box on the side of the carb, a screw also hepls keep the choke closed until warm up, this screw can be adjusted tpo control how tight it holds the choke cloesed, here"s how to adjust this screw to slow fast idle speed, Locate on the carb, where the gas pedal connects, have a friend operate the gas pedal with the engine off, once you locate the linkage, you"ll also see 2 screws with springs around them, 1 is for fast idle the other for regular idle, you want the fast idle screw, notice this screw will lay against and Half moon shaped tab, while the other screw lays against a shaft, you need the screw that lays against the half moon shaped tab. Start the engine and step on the gas pedal slightly and relaease, at the screw that lays against this half moon, simply turn it counter clockwise or toward you just 1 2 or 3 turns very slowly, you'll hear the fast idle come down but you don"t want the fast idle to low, listen to the engine very carefully, slow it down just a bit, it should still race though but not out of control. Of course for a full carb, adjustment the shop should handle that., but this info will help.

I want to know how to adjust a gas valve on a gas furnace supply pressure is 11 inches of water column and manifold side is 2 inches of water column i want to adjust it to 3and a half inches of water...


There is small cap on top of valve that is slotted for screwdriver. Take off cap small spring underneath. Hook op manomiter to valve. Small allen screw on outlet off valve unscrew puy your manomiter fitting there. Turn on funace and turrn adjustment screw with small allen wrench or small screwdriver. Very easy ..Rus

Lighting the pilot light


The steps involved can vary slightly depending on your furnace model and pilot valve type, so if possible try and find the instructions inside the furnace door cover or in the instruction manual. This is for a gas fired furnace, but applies to any gas-fueled appliance including water heater. Two of the most common types of pilot valve body assemblies either have a red reset button and a gas valve or no reset button and a valve knob that can be depressed. But whichever type you've got, if you have an older model furnace with a standing pilot (flame is lit all the time) then this is the basic procedure.
  • Turn you thermostat to 80 degrees or to a setting that will demand heat. Make sure the thermostat is in "Heat" mode.
  • Go to the furnace and find the pilot valve. The pilot valve body is a box shaped device into which the main gas line will run and is located near the gas burners. It will usually have a gas **** or valve knob that reads "On, "Pilot" and "Off." Locate this gas **** or knob.
  • Turn the knob or gas **** to the "Off" position and wait about 3 minutes for any residual gas to clear away.
  • Find the pilot. It's located near the gas burner tube assembly in the furnace.
  • Get your match or lighter ready. Sometimes the pilot is hard to reach. If possible, try and use a long fireplace match when you light it. If you don't have a fireplace match then a butane BBQ grill lighter works well too. If you don't have that, then you can fasten a match to the end of a stick when you light the pilot
  • If you have a pilot with a red Reset button, turn the gas valve from "Off," to "Pilot."
  • If you have a pilot with no red button, turn the knob from "Off" to "Pilot."
  • Place the lit match or ignited lighter tip at the pilot and depress and hold the button or depress the knob as appropriate. Depress the button or knob for about 30 seconds. This maintains gas flow to the pilot until the thermocouple gets hot enough to open the main gas valve.
  • Once the pilot stays lit, slowly release the button or knob and turn the gas **** or knob from the "Pilot" position to the "On" position. This will ignite the burners and keep the flow of gas supplied as required for the burners as called for by the thermostat.
  • If the burners fail to ignite then it may be because the thermocouple did not get hot enough to open the gas valve. Wait a few minutes and then repeat the above procedure. This time hold the red reset button or depress the knob for about 45-60 seconds.
  • Once the main furnace burners ignite, adjust the thermostat to the desired setting.
  • If you've followed the previous steps on lighting the pilot and it still does not light after, or will not stay lit, then you probably have a problem with the thermocouple or an adjustment needs to be made to the pilot. You'll need a furnace service technician to replace or repair these parts. You may find that the pilot lights, but it is an anemic looking flame. That's a different problem we'll look at in the next section.
  • If the pilot lights but the flame is a weak yellow flame, it will not get hot enough to heat the thermocouple to its set point allowing the gas valve to open.
    A natural gas flame should be a bright blue with the tip of the flame having just a tinge of yellow. A propane flame should have a bluish green flame with a tinge of yellow at the tip. The flame should be strong enough to hit the thermocouple tip about 1/2 inch from the tip end. If the flame is weak or shaky looking, check to see that a breeze or draft is not blowing on it. Adjusting the Flame
    There is usually a small screw on the pilot valve body that will adjust the flame. You may have to refer to the manufacturer's instructions to find the screw. Turn the screw as needed to adjust the flame throw. Yellow Flame
    A yellow flame is caused by lack of air and incomplete combustion. It can be caused by a dirty pilot tube tip. Split Flame
    This is caused by dirt in the pilot tube. Take a needle or small nail and gently clean the tube. Flickering or Wavering Flame
    A flame that flickers is usually caused by a draft.

Wall furnace? maybe and maybe not! if there is a way it would be on the gas valve and be labeled (though it might be hard to read). often the adjustment screw is under another screw but always labeled.

Pilot goes out


If the pilot won't stay lit, the thermocouple may be loose or faulty, the pilot orifice may be clogged, or the pilot light's flame may be set too low and needs to be adjusted. You can clear a clogged orifice with a piece of thin wire, such as a bread tie with the paper stripped off of it. Be sure to turn off the gas to the furnace first! Also shut off the switch or circuit breaker that controls power to the furnace. Just poke the thin wire into the tiny orifice where the pilot flame normally burns to knock off any ash or debris. Some pilots have a flame adjustment screw for adjusting the flame. To adjust this, refer to your owner's manual. Normally, this is simply a matter of turning the flame adjustment screw to achieve a full, steady 1 1/2-inch to 2-inch flame that doesn't have any yellow in it.
