Are you certain that the pattern selector is set for straight stitch and not buttonhole?

Turn the handwheel so that the needle is up and the take-up lever is in it's highest position. Then turn the pattern selector knob through all of the patterns back and forth a few times. Finally, select straight stitch and see if the length works. If not, need to take it to a repair person to determine the course of action.

On necchi model 537L which buttons are for stitch length

It is generally the large knob on the right side about halfway between the top and bottom of the machine. The numbers should range from zero to 4 or 5. Zero is zero stitch length, five would be the largest stitch length.

if the machine can do a basting stitch the information should be in the sewing machine manual, if you don't have a manual, add a comment with the name and model number of the machine and someone should be able to help you find one.

Settings for standard sewing stitch

I can't see what model machine this is, however in general terms a straight stitch is achieved by setting stitch length to 2.5 with stitch width of zero. If you are sewing a very heavy fabric, then lengthen the stitch length up to three. If you make the stitch length longer such as four, then the seam will pull up and gather the fabric.

Take a look at the stitch length dial. If you turn that dial counter clockwise (to about 7 o'clock), it will set to stretch stitch. Then all of the stretch stitch features will work. When you want to go back to straight stitching, just move that dial back to what ever stitch length you wish.
