How old is the compressor ? This trouble shooting is directed to the vane and screw types of air compressors.
For exact information on the equipment you are working on, go to the manufacturer’s maintenance and repair manual.
Here are some possibilities.
Compressor does not reach design pressure or capacity:
Air Pressure safety valve is leaking
Receiver air valve is open
Unloader valve is leaking
Loose Piping or fittings
Compressor will not load or unload:
Unloader valve defective
Air control valve is sticking or dirty
Unloader pressure is improperly set too high or too low
Water in the control lines
Plugged control lines
The air compressor CFPM is low:
Dirty air compressor air filter
Defective air intake control valve
High idle on power source improperly set
Damaged or worn rotor blades

SOURCE: looking for a maintenance manual
I worked at a tool rental store for several years that had many ir185 compressors. They had many manuals in boxes that were not used. I just bet that you could call or visit rental yards in your area that rent that unit and find all the information that you need. Talk to the service tach, most will be glad to help if not with manual, the info that you need to keep your machine in good service. IR service kits are available through wwgrainger.com. enjoy

SOURCE: compressor oil
PLease contact IR http://www.irtools.com/serviceandsupport/techpubs.aspx
and direct this question to them. You do not want to make a mistake here as it will cost you a compressor. I would only accept what IR says is acceptable

ITS A POSSIBILITY AND YOU BETTER HOPE ITS NOT SPINNING BECAUSE THE SCREW COMPRESSOR IS LOCKED UP. CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE SUMP AND SEE IF THE ROTOR WILL TURN WHEN NOT RUNNING. TYPICALLY THE DIESEL ENGINE WILL TURN HIGHER RPMS WHEN IT HAS NO DRAG ( NO COMPRESSOR HOOKED UP ). YOU CAN GET THE PARTS FROM INGERSOL RAND OR ANY RENTAL YARD - UNITED, PENSKE, SUNBELT, ETC. THEIR MECHANIC SHOPS ARE USUALLY FOR HIRE AND CAN EVEN INSTALL IT FOR A CHARGE. ALSO MAKE SURE NOTHING BUILT A NEST IN THERE. IF YOU REMOVE THE SCREW, MAKE SURE AND WATCH FOR SHIMS. THOSE SHAFTS NEED TO LINED UP PERFECT TO REDUCE VIBRATION. GOOD LUCK

Use Ingersoll Rand Pro-Tec fluid only. It hold 3 gallons. If you have a sight glass on the receiver tank do not fill it over 1/2 way up.
