How i format my 16gb data traveler

If your computer is XP, Vista or Windows 7, right click on the "My Computer" icon,
then left click on "Manage", on the left side list left click on :"Disk Management".
If your fash drive is pluged in and detected it will appear on the list of drives.
Look for the 16GB drive, then left click to have a list of option to perform on
the drive. Select "Format" and a pop-up window will appear for formatting options.
I recommend "Fat 32", as it is best for normal transport or backup option.

I have a maxtor one touch 4 1 TB and I used it for a PC w windows 7. Now I have an apple computer and want to format it so I can read both pc and mac

FAT 32 format can be accessed by both pc and mac. the drive should be already Fat 32 formatted, but still, the files stored from the mac will not be able to be read by windows and visa versa in most situations.

you will run into trouble if you have to fat 32 format it yourself, as windows will only format up to 32 gigs of it in fat 32- you will have to make multiple 32 gig partitions to use the entire drive, and would be unable to keep more than 32 gigs of info per backup or folder, bacause of all the seperate partitions.

Not able to put big file on it like 4,7GB files..

Make sure its formatted in NTFS format, FAT32 can only handle files upto 2GB
To be able to formt it to NTFS you have to go to Device Manager and set the policy of the USB Stick device to "Optimize for Performance". The default is to optimize for Quick Removal, which restricts you to the FAT filesystem

Windows asking me to format my flash drive

Just format your flash drive! Before you start formatting your flash drive, transfer all data from your flash drive 'cause when you format your flash drive, it will erase all the data. After you have formatted the flash drive, then you can transfer back the data to your flash drive.

I have new SanDIsk 2GB that I want to use but it says I need to format it ...when I try to do this I get an error stating that windows could not complete the operation.

It happened to my thumb drive as well. What I did is to run an antivirus software first. Then connected it to a different usb port in my computer and did a format. You may also try connecting it to another computer.

Hope this helps!

I ve just bought a lacie desktop hard disk 500gb and its not doing anything

New hard drives are "Raw" and have to be formated for any Operating system to recognize it. If the Hard drive is installed I would suggest, if you have a Win98 cd, boot from that, select with cd rom support, at the prompt type in fdisk, Fdisk will display all fixed disks present, select your new HD and configure it, with large disk support, etc.

If you don't have a win98cd download GParted live cd and burn on cd. and boot with that it will display all hard drives and you can select your new HD and format it to fat 32 or ntfs or linux ext partitions/swap files.
