My western digital external HDD 650GB freeze my computer during boot up

My western digital 650GB freeze up during windows and I am wondering what is going on with my computer and hard drive. I tried re formatting on another computer and after the format was complete it worked but after I disconnected the USB from my laptop it stopped working. What I have is a Toshiba laptop and I was wondering could it be doing this because there is not enough power going to the hard drive? I have Windows XP media Center could that also pose a problem.

Thanks everyone I am going insane trying to figure out whats going on.

To be more detailed into this problem if I leave the western digital plugged into my USB port on my laptop when windows tries to boot up it will shut down the internal hard drive. Is it something with the external hard drive. It is frustrating because I would be nice to have it boot up with my windows xp.

Apparently I have the same problem. The computer will not boot up when a WD Elements 750 GB is attached. I have to detach it, boot up, and then re-attach it for it to work.

This happened to me too. My BIOS wanted to boot to this external drive and not the internal drive which has the OS on it. At startup, I had to enter the BIOS and change the boot order to boot to the internal drive first.

These drives are too complicated and they die like crazy.
It sounds like it's fairly new so you shouldn't have problems with RMA.
You are lucky you didn't have any valuable data on it...

to remove the hdd password do the follwing
1) Restart your computer. Note that during computer restart, the screen goes blank for 3 to 5 seconds. Text then appears and the operating system boots up.
2) As soon as the first text lines appear on the screen, press the "Del" key on your keyboard to enter the BIOS setup
3) Navigate to "Security" in the BIOS menu using the arrow keys on your keyboard
4) Navigate to the option "Hard Disk User Password" and press "Enter
5) Navigate to a hard drive, press "Enter" and select "Disable" to remove the hard drive password.
6) Press "F10" to save and exit the BIOS settings. Computer booting resumes.

this will remove the hdd password

Hello,

Unplugging the CDROM didn't cause this issue but installing the western digital on that cable did cause your drive numbers to change in BIOS. You need to disconnect the external hard drive from the SATA cable but leave the power connected, then boot windows. Once booted reconnect the SATA cable. Check and see if it shows up in your disk management utility.

To do this, right click on computer, then left click manage. When the management console opens, click Disk Management on the left side and scroll down through your drives. Let me know if it shows up and what it says about the partition on the right, I'll keep my eyes open for your reply.

This issue could be a simple one have you changed the jumper setting on the back of the drive correctly, if it is set to cable select you will have this type of conflict, if it is on sata 2 change the jumper setting to either master or slave then reboot and see what happens. If you have set this right then it is a possibility, with the noises you are hearing from the hdd that it is faulty, and may have been damaged in transit.

Windows Server trying to boot from external hard drive

go into your 'update settings'. there is a section of where it asks you about how you want your settings set and where to send updates to. You may find the problem here. Check all the 'advanced' settings as well. If your Western digital is plugged in via USB and not requiring updates, unplug it while starting your system, after complete start up, reinsert the USB plug. It may show new devise found, then from here, you may be asked to reinstall it to stop the rebooting.

Computer freezes on start-up when western digital 1tb external hdd plugged in to computer, computer starts fine with it unplugged. The hard drive can be plugged back in after start-up.

This is a known problem with these drives. Disabling USB legacy support in your Bios should solve the problem., it did in my case but at the expense of not being able to boot from a USB device. Definitley a problem with their enclosure or drive.
