yes the fan works, it sounds like the hard drive is doing what it normally does, and i messed with the BIOS settings to try and fix the problem, but it was never touched prior to this...i tried to reinstall windows XP but t wont work. at one time (when the problem first started) it said there was a video error, but that hasn't come up again. if there is a way to just restore the system back to the way it came from the factory that might work, but if there is any other solution please advise, thank you

My nephews computer teacher installed XP, which originally came with
Vista, on his acer aspire 3100. Now it won't even log in, it just stays
on the windows screen loading. I'm trying to install Vista back and I
already set the boot sequence for it to start on the cd-rom. It did it
and started to run the cd but it just stayed on loading windows files
FOREVER. So I did a hard boot which takes me to the "Start in safe
mode, normal or last known good configuration" and which ever I select
it takes me to windows screen and just runs the loading bar and that's
it. I know I have a ubuntu cd somewhere in my garage, I'll try that.
But in the meantime if anybody has any solutions please let us know...

    There are various possibilities...
    Is the fan working?
Is the hard drive doing a clicking noise?
Have you (or anybody else) been fiddling with the BIOS settings?

Try taking out the battery and booting up with the adapter only.

Ok, the first thing is to load the BIOS default settings.
Then, set the cd-rom as the first boot device, and try to start windows setup from cd.
If it loads and detects the hard drive, the it is promising.
Another way to check your system for working capability would be to use a Linux cd (kubuntu is perfect for this) and see if it loads and works correctly. The interface is very similar to windows, so you will not have prblems using it. And it has also a MEM Test as a booting option, wich I reccomend you to use.

Acer 3100 keeps wanting to reboot

Sounds like you have a BIOS problem. You can't update/reload it; for that, you need Windows. Try restoring defaults.

Acer Aspire 3100 series. Display screen getting dark

This is such a user error. I had the same problem on my 3100-1718. It was as simple as holding down the Fn key and using the left and right arrow keys to change the brightness... I am a goofball for ever letting this stay dark for a month !

Acer Aspire 3100 boot up problem

unless it is something more serious, first keep pressing F8 when you turn on the notebook and it should enter safe mode. When in safe mode select the operating system that is highlighted and then a screen will appear with options, one being 'Last Known good Configuration', highlight this and press enter. The system will reboot and start again in windows as normal hopefully. If you are not able to get a screen showing in safe mode there is something more serious wrong and it could be hard drive fault or motherboard, but if you can see the disc drive light flickering the system is loading and you may have a graphical fault.
