Question about Whirlpool MH6150XMS Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Exhaust an won't shut off

I have a Whirlpool micro hood model# MH6150XMS. When I heat something up the fan does not shut off when the time is up or when I open the door. Usually I can get it to stop by running it again for 5 secs then opening the door but even this does not always work. Eventually some arbitrary combination of button presses and opening/closing the door will work. Do you know if there is a way to reset the computer ro another way I can stop this from happening?

Some internal cooling sensor or something won't shut off. Whirlpool said that it may stay on for up to an hour or so, cooling. It stays on indefinately. It is not the exhaust fan, that you can turn on, hi/lo/off by the button.

One of the things that well cause that to happen is the voltage Reg. sticking close. thats only one thing there are 7 others that well do that you need to find a electronic Tech who can look at it for you.

The fans on this microwave will automatically turn on when I have more than one burner on the gas range going. The fan is horrendously loud and will not allow me to shut off for 2-3 minutes regardless if I...

That's typically normal operation. The microwave has a thermostat which turns on the hood vent exhaust fan at a certain temperature to protect the controller.

Your owner's manual will cover vent fan operation.

If for some reason you don't have yours, you can download Whirlpool owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

I always recommend that you use the vent fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls and door panels.

If - above and beyond this - the fan has a problem, that could make it excessively loud. Some are just loud though, it's hard to judge without actually hearing it.

You can contact Whirlpool customer service with your model number via that link above and ask them about the loudness. They may be able to tell by listening over the phone if it's abnormally loud.

My Sharp carousal microwave model R 1482 goes on and off on its own. When cooking the steam from boiling water will set the micro off like I am pushing buttons on it.

If it's just the hood vent exhaust fan coming on, that's normal due to a temperature sensor (the hood vent exhaust TCO / thermostat).

If other functions on the microwave are coming on, then the keypad and / or controls may be shorting due to moisture and / or heat, and that needs to be addressed.

You should always run the microwave oven's hood vent exhaust fan whenever you're cooking on the stove top.

If you do, and the trouble persists, I would suspect the controls.

The service manual is at our site and we have uploaded it here to help you.

I have a WHirlpool Hood/Micro combo MH7140XFB-0. The micro portion has quit working -- lights, exhaust fan and clock still work. Turntable in micro turns but it doesn't heat and makes a funny noise.

Did your cooktop lights fail recently? If so, then the circuit board may have been damaged by a surge. We can probably repair that for you.

Otherwise, I would suspect a shorted high voltage diode or bad magnetron.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

mini_manual_behind_grille_small.jpgAt our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you don't find your mini-manual, or if you want to look at it before removing the controller, you can download it here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number (as MH7140XFB0) here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

Have whirlpool gold accuwave micro hood combo model# GH51884XPS5

The inspector is correct, air should be coming through the top louvers, although you sometimes will have a little air coming from the sides and back. Drop the microwave and see which way the blower is rotated, towards the louvers or towards the back or top. Some units also have a panel that blocks the venting from going the wrong way. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

My micro wave will not warm items up

You have not given much information, but it appears the Magnetron element (the heating device) in your oven has failed. Repairs are not cost effective my friend. New units are low priced and have many new features. Consider this.

Message for Chad

Hi. Your problem is most likely with the magnetron. I am guessing that it is going to need to be replaced. This is almost always the problem. Here is a link on how to test it. http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

Be sure and do both tests. You will need an Ohm meter (a multi tester will have an setting for testing resistance).

Just please use caution and discharge the capacitors!!! Working on ANY microwave poses a risk for shock if caution is not used.

Microwave does not heat/cook

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Whirlpool MH6150XMS Stopped Heating and Turning

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
