Question about Brother MFC-8860DN All-In-One Laser Printer

1 Answer

MFC-8860DN I have a Brother MFC-8860. I am getting a "No Paper" message even though there is plenty of paper in the paper tray. I have tried changing the drum since I had the message that the drum life was near the end for quite a while, but the copier kept working fine. I have also tried unplugging the machine for several minutes. When I turn the machine back on, it looks like it is going to be fine and then when it goes to feed the paper, I get the "No Paper" message again. I have tried cleaning the paper tray also. Any ideas?

This is a common issue.
Here is the solution:
Pull out the paper tray
On the left of the feed roller there is a black piece of plastic that is a sensor. It is jammed forward. Gently bend it out to the left and push it back until it snaps back into place.

Be careful not to break it.

I have had the exact same problem. The problem is in the tray. It won't raise the paper properly despite how much paper you have in it. Make sure that all of the springs are there, and that the plastic sensors are correct.

I've found it useful to just buy another tray. You can find it as low as $30-35.

It's a very typical mechanical problem, but most likely resolved by changing the tray.

It sounds like 1 or 2 paper sensors are out of place, Brother has a bulletin about this problem. You can call Brother at 877-276-8437 to find a Brother repair center.

Open the file you are trying to print, go to "file", "page setup", "Paper" and choose "Default tray" under paper source. It may give you an error message that the margins are outside of the paper. Click on "Fix this", then you can print. I had the same problem.

The paper is not feeding from the paper tray. The loud click is alarming, but not the problem. Check the adjustments in the paper tray. The left and right guides should be snug, but the rear guide should give between a 1/16 inch and a 1/8 inch of free play. If the rear guide is tight, that is the problem. You can check for this by depressing the lever on the right front of the tray. Depressing the lever should raise the stack of paper out of the tray so that it can slide forward.

If you remove the paper from the tray, but will see calibration marks for the paper size you are using. Unlock the read paper guide n the tray, squeeze the release and move the guide ot the mark for the size paper you are using. For example, it you are using letter size paper, the read guide should point to "LTR".

Pull the paper tray out, look in the top middle by the roller holder, you will see a black plastic lever (edge actuator) hanging down, it should be flush with the roller, be careful when pushing back in place.

No paper in traY

make sure the tray is set for letter size, many times the handle moves and the settings on the tray change, so the paper moves back to the settings of legal paper, so when the printer tries to load paper, it cant.

NO paper light

Something worth considering: Check that there is enough slack in the paper tray to allow the gears at the front to lift the paper to the pickup wheel. I've found that on my firm's 8860DN, the paper tray being set too "tight" can cause too much friction, preventing it from moving. If you can raise/lower it by hand (using the gears on the side of the tray), you should be fine.
