I would assume that the wire/power supply is more likely to be the problem. Even if the battery is completely shot, most laptops will start if the power cord is plugged into the outlet and the laptop is turned on. You should check on replacing the power supply / power cord. Buy it from a store that takes returns with no questions asked. I've even bought one, tested it in the store, (after asking in advance if I could do so). This is a good idea if you live 40 miles from the place it's purchased.

Motherboard problems could possibly cause such an issue, but troubleshooting that is far more extensive than trying a different power supply. If you're already certain that the power supply is good, then it still wouldn't hurt to try another one just incase something is wrong with it where it connects to the laptop. The port (hole) where the power supply plugs in could also be a problem; does it have any play in it (Does the port move if you press beside it? Does it move while plugging in? Does the cord still fit snugly or not? (Occasionally you can get good readings on a volt meter and still have a problem with that device delivering the voltage to that laptop. You can waste a lot of time troubleshooting if you don't at least try a new power supply early on in the process.)

Unplug and replug in the power at the laptop (and everywhere in the cord where there is a connection).

Remove the battery, and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This SOMETIMES clears a temporary problem with power delivery.

Return power cord and battery, and then try to start it.

If these brief steps don't resolve your problem I would suggest you try a new power supply from a company that takes returns. There are some universal ones that fit various laptops. Let me know if you want me to recommend one.

The motherboad is a possibility I wouldn't take completely off the table, but it wouldn't be my first assumption. No one can diagnose it perfectly for you through a forum, just send you in logical direction(s). The actual troubleshooting is up to you.

IMPORTANT: BEFORE you hold the button down for 30 seconds, make sure you have the laptop BOTH unplugged AND the batttery out so no electricity could possibly get to it during the 30 seconds you hold the power button. (unfortunately I do not see where FixYa will let me edit the post!)

Hi,

If you see power lights but nothing appears on the screen, it could be a "POST" (Power-on Self Test) problem or simply LCD problem.

Here are some steps that you can try. One of these may work on your case.

1. Remove the battery and the ac adapter then press the power button for at least 20 seconds to drain electric charges left on the system. (You may need to repeat this step to get it work.)

2. If above step doesn't work, try to plug in an external monitor and see if you get display from the external monitor.

3. If you get display from the external monitor, I'm sure your having problem with the LCD components. In this case, check and replace faulty LCD backlight, LCD cable or LCD inverter. The LCD inverter is often a culprit.

4. Try to reinsert the memory module/s (RAM) of the unit, try using one RAM at a time to see if it works. A faulty RAM will cause the laptop not to POST.

5. If reinserting the RAM doesn't help, most likely your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

- try to plug an external monitor on your laptop
- if you can see a screen on the external monitor, then you have a faulty LCD
- if you don't see anything on the external monitor, then you have a faulty motherboard

Hp laptop dv6000 won't start how to solve

Hi,

I think you can try this step and see if it makes your laptop work.

1. Unplug the AC adapter and Remove the Battery
2. Press and Hold the Power Button for 30 secs. without the battery and ac adapter
3. Put it all back in and see if the machine will work.

If happened it doesn't work. Try this.

1. Turn off laptop, unplug laptop, and remove the battery.
2. Unscrew all panels on the back of the laptop.
3. Reseat RAM and Hard Drive.
4. Check if the power port is loosed.

If happens those steps don't work it could be with the Motherboard, CPU, Video Graphics or LCD itself that's having a problem.

Hope it helps somehow.
