Canon AV-1 shutter release not working.

I have a canon AV1, it was in a box for many years, but last year I found it and took it to the repair, they cleaned it and it was working perfectly. About two months ago I stopped using it and left it on the shelf. Today I picked it up to take some pictures and the shutter release wasn't working. I press it and there is no "click". I checked the batery and it's fine. any ideas of how to fix it?

that would be a good start. remember that capacitors can store enough energy to shock or kill you.

SOURCE: Stuck shutter D100 Nikon

The R06 is the buffer indication, not part of the error. It would appear more work is required. Other components may have failed, or the shutter itself may be bad.

I'm afraid this one is not a DIY. Nikon is pricey on repairs, you may fair better checking the repair service search here on Fixya.

Film release button on bottom of body is stuck in. Wont pop back out.

If you can not wind and release the shutter, the film release button will not come up.
If you can not trip the shutter, by replacing the mirror release magnet at the bottom will usually fix the problem.

My AE1 is malfunctioning. The shutter is being released when I advance instead of allowing me to expose the film with the shutter button.

This is very common on all AE-1 variants and the closely related AV-1.

The simple answer is that your camera needs a thorough CLA service (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust). In most cases all that's happened is that the lubricants put in there thirty plus years ago have dried out and gummed up. If you're unlucky then gears or levers have worn, but there are plenty more of these cameras in good condition for free/cheap if that's happened (although they'll also be due a CLA if not done recently).

At the same time, you can get the camera's gooey foam light seals and mirror buffers replaced; most places charge extra for this one-off service, but sometimes they'll do it for free if you politely point out that you can take the camera elsewhere.

Freshly serviced, your camera can last for many more years.

If in the UK then I can recommend Colchester Camera Repair, they're Canon specialists and absolutely excellent, but you may have your own preferred repairer. Any competent camera repairer can do this job very easily.

Don't try to force anything on your camera until you get it repaired, and try to get the job done asap, as sometimes this fault weakens internal parts due to springs being held in stressed positions for longer than designed.

DIY repair is possible but quite tricky, but if you're prepared to risk it going wrong then the experience is worthwhile. You'll find various "how-to" guides online although I haven't got any bookmarked at present to refer you to.

I hope that I've answered your question, please don't forget to rate my answer.

Canon AV-1, Film Advance Lever won't spin..

There's not anything you can do on a DIY basis, it happens to most of them (and the closely related AE-1). But you might be able to get it working temporarily by sitting the camera on top of a dry towel on top of a radiator or after placing it in a warm airing cupboard for 24 hours; this may soften up gummed lubricants enough to allow the parts to move as intended. If it works, this just leaves the camera in a better state to be assessed for a proper repair, it's not a true fix and will go wrong again.

The camera usually just needs a good CLA (Clean, Lubricate, Adjust) service by a professional camera repairer. This should include checking and adjusting the light meter calibration at the same time. Afterwards it should ideally be serviced every year or two, but will probably last another thirty or so years!

In the UK expect to pay at least £60 and about another £15 to £20 if you need the one-off repair of having all the gooey foam light seals/mirror buffers replaced. You can try haggling the price, but as there is far more demand than supply I doubt that you'll find the job much cheaper. If it is, corners ARE being cut: I've seen some cameras supposedly "fresh" from a CLA which have simply been cleaned, polished and had a little bit of WD40 or 3-in1 oil sprayed inside. Almost invariably these were done by less reputable folks on auction websites for around £40.

I use a number of repairers worldwide, but if you're in the UK then I highly recommend Colchester Camera Repair Service.

It's fair to advise that the repair will cost more than the camera is currently worth, but you can't buy a fully working and freshly serviced SLR for less than the repair cost, so it's definitely a worthwhile investment.

Good luck, you have an excellent camera with a great supply of excellent and relatively cheap lenses which can easily outmatch the photographic quality of current digital SLR's if used correctly.

I hope that you've found my posting to be of use, all that I ask in return is that you return the favour by taking a moment to rate my answer.

I was just got a new battery for the canon av 1 and i swiched the dial to B and pressed the photo button, and i heard a click. nothing happened so i took the lens off and the mirror inside was retracted up...

OK, Tony, that sounds really strange, LOL.

There should be no orange plastic in there. I considered the AV-1 myself years ago, but was already invested in Minolta gear.

Without pictures, it's really hard to say. I kinda feel like something that should never be there, got put into the mirror box/ shutter area. It got broken off when the camera fell down. It would cost too much to repair, so it was sold for parts.

Look it over to see if the shutter was damaged. I 'd think so, but check it. Can you remove the plastic without damaging the camera further?

The A-1, AE-1, AV-1 were very similar and very successful models for Canon and another "Spares" of that series should be easy to find. You most likely will need to get the shutter from another junker and have a shop cobble together one that works. You might ask the repair guy if he wants to keep the extra parts. You may get a discount on repair. Otherwise hang on to those spares yourself.

Canon av1 film advance lever will not extend

The AV1 is an electronic camera that has to have a good battery for the shutter to trip. You can find the 6V battery at most drug stores or Walmart

Film advance

In most film cameras, a battery is not necessary to manual advance film using the lever. Your Canon AV-1 is no exception. I have owned two cameras from the same group, the AE-1 and the Canon A-1. Neither required a battery for manual film advance.

Make sure the ring around the shutter release button is set to "A", otherwise the shutter won't release and the film lever won't work correctly. If the ring shows an "L", the shutter release is locked.

Here's a graphic of the batteries that can be used in your AV-1:

Infamous error 99 (again!)

shutter mechanism of canon 300d lasts for around 5000 shots or less!! yes it is made of plastic materials thats why here in the philippines I am making my own metal replacement parts that lasts. Unfortunately, in your country you cant do anything but to replace it with same original replacement parts. avoid using faster shutter speed and continuous shots.

Canon Ae-1

Shutter release magnet faulty ( your camera is cocked but since you cannot release the shutter you cannot wind the film ). Remedy : open bottom cover by removing the two screws. You will see two small electro magnets one on the left hand side and the shutter release one on the right hand side ( it is the bigger one of the two ). The very thin wires from the magnet to the small circuit board on the right hand side may be broken : inspect and resolder 10 joints you see on the p.c. board. If no joy replace the s.r.magnet.
