Will resetting my camera make the buttons work again? Is there a way to reset the camera without going to the menu (since the buttons don't work)?

Only the two buttons on top of the camera. It looks like you have a real problem. All buttons on the back look dead.
Reset of a camera is done every time you switch it on, so that will not bring any difference. One step up is removing the battery for a few moments, bit when the error keeps coming back, I think someone must have dropped the camera once, or some moisture came in the camera, and did something with internal connections.
When nothing helps and you did not drop the camera, check if it is still under warranty and contact a Olympus certified service centre.
DOn't send it in unless you know what it could cost. Sometimes repairs are more expensive than a new camera.

How can i reset factory setting on my sony dsc55 camera

Reset button on the camera

  1. Locate the RESET button on the camera.
  2. Use a pointed object (like a ballpoint pen) to press and hold the RESET button for 2-3 seconds.
  3. After 2-3 seconds has elapsed, release the RESET button.
Initialize or Reset option(s) in the camera menus
  • The menu layout is different between cameras so check the operating instructions.
  • In general, there will be a Reset or Initialize section within the menus of the camera.
  • Some cameras allow for resetting or initializing different options such as wireless settings, the settings used in taking the last picture, or all settings. Be sure to look at all available options in the product manual.
Manual reset process

Cameras manufactured prior to the year 2000 do not have reset buttons or options in the menus. Follow the steps below to reset:

    1. Turn off the camera.
    2. Remove the battery pack.
    3. Remove the button-sized lithium battery.
    4. Allow the camera to remain without power for 30 seconds.
    5. Reinsert the button-sized lithium battery.
    6. Reinsert the battery pack.
    7. Turn on the camera.

NOTE: If your camera is experiencing an issue and it is not resolved by performing the appropriate reset or initialize procedure above, service may be required.

The shutter of the camera is not closing

Do you mean when you press the shutter release button, oohing happens?
Are you sure you are giving the camera enough time to focus, before you press the button complete?
Normaly, you have to press the button half way, and wait till the camera is focused. The camera will give an audio or a visual signal. Then press the button complete.
Be patient. Point an shoot camera's sometimes need more than a second to focus.
It is not like in the old days, every time you pressed the shutter release button the camera fired.

What do the different buttons do please?

It depends upon the camera that you've bought. Many camera's have different options. The most common are a few control buttons for the settings, a Switch on/off button. A big button on top right of the camera to take pictures. This button has two levels. When you press it half-way, the camera would focus, and when you push it further, the camera would take a picture. There would also be two buttons, labeled T and W. These maybe in the form of push buttons or sliders. These are for zooming in and out. Control Buttons let you change the settings of the camera and also the pictures that you have taken. For further insight into their functioning, refer to the user guide provided with the camera. Thank you

Deleting images

Generally your camera will have a main menu, which lists this as an option.

Look for a menu button on your digital camera. While the camera is on, press this button, and cycle through the options that appear, watching for a listing which says something like "Erase all".

Usually there will be another button or set of buttons that have arrows on them, and let you move up and down among the listed options. Press the up or down button (or the right/left button, whichever applies to your camera), until the "Erase all" option is highlighted.

There should also be a button on your camera that says something like "Ok" or "Function Set"; no matter what it's called, the important thing is that it is NOT one of the buttons which either opens the menu listings (the one I'm describing as the "menu" button, regardless of what your camera calls it), or moves between menu items (the up/down/left/right buttons). Once you have found the menu item for "Erase all", and have highlighted it, press this button.

You will probably get a message asking you to verify your choice, since once the photos are deleted from your camera, you won't be able to retrieve them, so most cameras will ask you to confirm any erasing you do, whether it's just one picture, or all the pictures in your camera's memory/storage. You confirm the deletion by pressing the same button that you used to start the deletion process.

So, to recap:

1) Turn the camera on.
2) Find and press the "Menu" button.
3) Find and press the arrow/next button until you see a menu item saying something like "Erase all".
4) Find and press the "OK" button -- or whatever button will get the camera to accept the menu item selection you've made.
5) If the camera asks you to confirm your choice, use the arrow/direction keys to highlight the "Yes" or "OK" option in the confirmation window.
6) Press the same button you used to start the process ("OK" or "Function Set"), one more time to confirm your choice.
7) The camera should now delete all of the photos in its memory.

WARNING: DO NOT DELETE YOUR PHOTOS UNTIL YOU'VE DOWNLOADED THEM, UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOU'LL NEVER WANT THEM. It is always better to have an extra backup of your pictures than to permanently lose something you can't replace.

If anyone else has used the camera, it's best to check with them to make sure that they've downloaded their pictures off of the camera, before doing a full delete of all pictures on the camera.

Most cameras will also let you individually delete pictures that came out badly, or where you accidentally took a picture you didn't mean to take. If you're not sure what else is in the camera's memory, it's always wisest to use this method, instead of deleting all the pictures at once.
