this is for the whirlpool washer,if you grab the top of the agitator can you spin it both ways without it grabbing,it should only spin one way,if you can spin it both ways you have bad dogs, the agitator cam kit part number is 285809 and it's around 13 dollars.pop off the center cap of the agitator, remove the 7 1/6 inch screw in the middle and pull off the top of the agitator to get at the dogs, you'll see them there are 4 of them, they waer down and the top of the agitator doesn't work.watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ensJz0h6wLM
Under the agitator you have what is called (agitating dogs). The agitator will have to be removed. The top should spin off, you will be able to look down into the agitator and see a bolt. Remove this bolt and the agitator can be pulled out. The agitators are small pieces of plastic with small teeth. These teeth get worn out over time or if the washer is overloaded. When the agitator free spins one way the teeth grab a (gear) on agitator and this is how you get the washing action (agitating). These dogs are easy to replace and cost about $5. I could be the pump slowly ceazing causing the belt to slip which would give a burning smell.
Motors in those units, are well build...have a service guy in but DON"t say anything about the motor.. because they will say it because you mentioned it
I sounds like you pump
There could be a problem with the transmission/gearbox (but that would probably involve you hearing some load noise's). It could be that the timer just needs to be replaced,,, or its even possible that since taping the timer makes it work sometimes that there could be an electrical problem between the timer and the transmission/gearbox, liek maybe a rusted or lose wire.
You probably have a problem with the agitator dogs. Located inside the agitator are agitator dogs. They are little plastic looking teeth that have smaller teeth on them. The sit inside the agitator and grab onto the teeth in the agitator stopping it so it agitates. If you pop off the top of the agitator and look in you will see them in there. They are small and off white. Cheap parts running around 7 dollars for the pack of four. Easy to replace too, just remove the old and replace with the new. Let me know if you have any other questions and if this was helpful. Good luck and have a great weekend.
It sounds like the agitator gripping teeth are worn out. To check this, take the agitator cap off with a strong knife or flat-head screw driver, pull the cap off and check the plastice teeth and four plastic hooks that grab the teeth. If they are worn out, then you will have to replace the agitator. To replace it, you will see a nut that is between the circlular teeth. Unscrew the nut and pull the agitator up hard.
I had the same problem. to solve I pulled of the cap where you add the Softener, Cleaned it , then look down the hole that is left in the agitator wheere the softener cap was, at the bottom is a plastic cap over the screw that keeps the agitaor on, pull this cap off and chedck trhe four dog that engage the saw teeth around the agitator, if they are there (shich mine where ) cleanall around. I used Fantasitc and poured it down the to fill up to the dogs. I manually turnee the agitaorthen flushed with hot water. It helop me. you got to be careful as the soap , like fantastic is slippery and the dogs will just slip if the soap is not cleaned all off;.
