Question about Necchi 3101 Mechanical Sewing Machine
(I can provide the exact model later, as I'm not home right now). The motor starts, the needle works, but it doesn't move forward (the material does not start moving forward) It sews in place. What could it be? Is it worth fixing? Apparently it is hard to find service for Necchi machines (i'm in Montreal, Canada). Thanks for your help.
Sounds like the feed dogs may be down or not working. Watch to see if the little teeth are moving under the pressure foot when you stitch( try to run unthreaded and with foot up no fabricto check) May be a button to turn up the feed dogs.

SOURCE: Necchi machine
Bu Mira was made in Italy between 1952-1956 it was the machine where the introduced the Wonder Wheel to make decorative stitches, olive green in color . There are some people who collect them but like all antiques the rearer the are and the better origonal condition the are in the more the are worth.

Make sure you sink the needle into the fabric before starting to sew. If that isn't it...remove the thread and rethread the machine. Make sure the thread isn't wrapped around the spool holder.

Generally when the needle does not pick up the bobbin thread, it means the needle is either too far in or just plain the wrong length. YOu might want to try lowering the needle just a hair and see if that helps.

SOURCE: skip stitch
The three most obvious causes (other than that of the machine possibly being slightly out of time) are:
1) Too small of a needle size - increase the size.
2) A needle that has a flaw / defect - change the needle.
3) Needle not inserted correctly, either not pushed all the way up into the needle bar, or not installed facing the correct place. On this machine, the small "scarf" in the needle (an indent just above the eye) shouldface the right side of the machine.

Try moving the stitch length dial to 4 or 5 - check the manual. You may have it in the position for very close together sewing. I had to do a lot of trying with my 4795 to get it to work right. I found that very thin thread, polyester kind, broke at the needle after a couple of stitches. I switched to coats & clarks thread and a Singer ball point needle and it works fine. Be sure your needle is inserted with the flat top toward the back of the machine. Good luck!
