Hp pavilion 513n power up problem

When power is turned on it stays on for a few seconds and goes off. The cpu fan and case fan does the same. The power indicator on the front panel likewise. Help me trouble shoot this problem I suspect maybe the power supply, how can I test this unit?

if your techie you could remove the side panel and see if the cpu fan is dust free. blow it out with compressed air .wait a couple minutes. then plug it back in turn it on and verify if the cpu fan is spinning or not. replace the fan if it doesn't spin. the computer thinks the cpu is overheating. hope it helps

I have an Hp pavilion slimline s3100n pc and after a while, it just shuts off with no warning whatsoever. When I try to turn it back on, it just shuts right back off. It's like I have to wait for it to...

Verify your fans are for the CPU and case are moving. You can remove the Pc cover and turn on the Pc. Watch the cooling fan on top of your CPU heat sink, it should begin spinning when you turn on your PC. If it doesn't then with the PC unplugged, make sure the connector for the fan is seated properly. From behind the PC you should be able to feel the Power Supply cooling fan moving air. Either of these could cause your PC to over heat and shut down.

My HP Pavilion turned off the other day and now won't stay on. It starts going through the boot up and then turns off before it gets to MS Welcome screen.

It could be overheating. If you are comfortable with opening up the case do this. Unplug the computer and place the it where you can work around it. Remove the knurled screw from the back of the left side panel. It's the one with the grill holes. Using canned compressed air blow the dust off of the cpu fan, back case fan, and the grill holes. Also blow out the power supply vent holes inside and the fan on the back. Hold the fans blades from spinning to prevent ruining the bearings. It could be a bad memery stick. Remove any cards and the memory sticks. Reinstall one stick, hookup the keyboard and display cable and power on the computer. If still nothing swap the ram sticks.

I want to upgrade my memory on my Pavilion 513n,

FixYa is a product support website, and as such we do not delve into manufacturing. No we cannot supply ram memory.

I can supply you with the solution to your questions, however.

This is HP Support, and the main page for the Pavilion 513n Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90384&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us

If you click on > Product information > Product specifications > HP Pavilion 513n Desktop PC Product Specifications,
you can view,

A) What type of ram memory the computer uses,
B) How much is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer,
C) How much is the Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot,
D) How many ram slots

Look under the Memory heading.
A) What type of ram memory
Type - DDR
It's DDR Sdram

Speed - PC1600/PC2100
Tells you either PC1600 can be used, or PC2100.

PC1600 is DDR Sdram that operates at 200MHz.
PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266MHz.

{To expound:
Ram memory operates at a Frequency Rate. Slang for frequency rate is 'Speed'.
Mega = approximately 1 Million
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second
Example: PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266 Million Cycles per Second }

B) What is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer. (Motherboard)
According to HP it is 1GB.

{Maximum - 1GB (2 X 512) HP recommended maximum}

I believe this to be wrong. The Total Maximum Amount is 2GB.
1GB per ram slot.

I base this upon using the memory configurator's of several websites, that sell ram memory for the Pavilion 513n desktop computer, and looking at what the motherboard chipset for the Pavilion 513n will support.

The motherboard chipset is the Intel 845GL.
This chart found on Wikipedia, states what the Intel 845GL chipset will support,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

As you can see reading across from the 845GL subheading, and looking under > Max.memory, 2GB is listed.

Sources for online memory configurators,
1) Crucial.com
2) Tigerdirect.com
3) Newegg.com
4) Memory4less.net

In this case,
C) Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot is 1GB.

D) There are Two ram slots. {Proper speak for ram Slot is ram Bank}

Kingston is a good brand for economical ram memory.
So is Ultra.

An easy way to find out what type of ram memory you need, and how much is the Maximum Total Amount, as well as the Maximum Amount for Each ram slot, is to use an automatic scanner from a website that sells ram memory.

The above four websites listed, are but a small handful of the total websites online that offer an automatic scan.
Let's use Crucial.com for an example.

On the main page,

http://www.crucial.com/

,you will see - Scan My System, in blue.
Simply click on it to run an automatic scan of your computers hardware.
Doesn't look at your personal effects, just the hardware of your computer.

After the scan is done, you will be presented with the ram memory info you need.
Several options of ram memory are presented for you to choose from.

CPU fan turns for a few seconds and stops, pc will not turn on. Have tried a good PSU, same issue. Removed all connection to motherboard apart from 20 pin, 4 pin power + cpu fan and PW switch: same issue.

1. First of all Remove dust from your CPU fan and try again if issue has been not resolve

2. Second test your SMPS by the help of Green & Red wire. In case fan is turning properly it mines your SMPS is ok

3. Third & last kindly replace your SMPS For the same.

Hp pavilion 513n tries to start up then turns off

This is a case where something that is getting switched on during start-up is causing the power supply to fail... probably due to a short. How ever I believe the short is in the power supply

This is an older HP model ( I have a 530N) with teh same problem. I bought a new power supply and installed it.

My mom has a Pavilion 513n desktop. At boot up it

you're receiving a "No POST" issue. It could be any base component in your system. Strip it down to the bare basics. Power supply, motherboard, RAM, CPU, fans. HDD. Then start removing those components until you receive an error message. You'll be able to figure out which part needs replacing from that.
