For a tub overflow washer (Part# PPC826-3) where should the "thick end" go - top or the bottom? Is pasting a little silicone recommended on it so that it has a better seal after I tighten the screw?

The thicker end goes up because of the sloped end of the bathtub. You should not need to apply any sealant - the gasket is compressed as the screw is tightened.

Installed bath 3 handle unit. hot handle is stiff and hard to turn, shower diverter is loose. How can I loosen the one and tighten the other? I'm sure it's probably the same adjustment

The handle adapters can be tightened by turning them clockwise and loosened by turning them counterclockwise. If the faucet manifold may need to be lined up parallel behind the wall and moved forward as well. Here is the parts breakdown for your faucet,

Please tell me how to tighten the off/on handle. It is loose and I can't figure out how to take it off or tighten it. This unit was installed about 3 1/2 years ago. Thank you very much. George

There is an Allen "screw" which is threaded in from the underside of the handle.
Simply tightening this screw 'should' tighten things up.
If that doesn't work, perhaps the Allen screw needs to be replaced.
If you have the Allen wrench to fit, you don't even have to turn off the water supply, just turn the handle up and let the water flow for the time it takes to snug it up.

It sounds like the faucet washer has come loose. Pull out the valve and replace the washer or just tighten the screw.

This is something best handled by a tub resurfacer. It is an area of specialized repair. Results varied depending on material tub is made of. Cast iron tubs Show repair more so than fiberglass. Check for tub resurfacing in Repair Service Link.

Moen Bath Tub Faucet

Hi varn4620,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You had to replace the faucet in the tub due to a broken plastic piece in valve stem. Bought a Moen ripped the wall out and put new faucet in. Went good untill we turned the water on and the shower rained on us. Tightened everything you could find to tighten .Every time the water is turned on the shower rains. Can this be fixed or is the faucet broken?

Is this new faudet a single handle? If so I"ve had this experience also. Most of the time it's because the guts were not lined up properly at the factory. You may have to play with it a bit.
Turn off the water and take the handle off and remove the sleave, remove and rotate the guts. Try 90' at a time. Turn water on to try it. Useually one of the other 3 positions will be right. The correct position is there, but it may take time to find it.
