Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

(RCA OPAL M4204A) An update was sent via internet, it went to my unit and errased the data (as warned) and the OPAL's program. It will not leave the 'initialize' window. Turning on and off and on again does not help.

    1. No reset hole, only MIC.
    2. Keylock switch does not push in, only side to side.
    3. I allowed another update to reconfigure the program format (it just happened).

Thanks, I will remember the other advice given for future reference.

Push down the key lock switch, I think on your model it is on the side of the unit.

If it does not work, try performing the reset procedure below, From
ThaMp3Doctor
I quote
"Opal has a reset hole on the back of the unit in which atoothpick (non metallic) can be inserted to reboot the player. If thisdoes not work, I suggest that you reformat the player by using theWindows format command on the unit. To reformat the memory:
Right click on the device within the Explorer or My Computer window
Select the format command (full format) to reformat the internal memory of the device. "

If it still does not work, then the lock switch is probably faulty or stuck inside, in this case you need to take apart the unit, to fix it.

Try playing with the lock switch, or resetting the unit, that should unlocck your MP3.

If that still does not work, it means that the firmware is corrupted, in this case you can try to reinstall the firmware using a computer, and downloading the file from RCA website: RCA Audio/Video - Support - Software Updates - RCA Opal.

If the computer cannot even see the Opal and update the software, then you are in troubles

Easy rip for opal mp3 player isnt working

There are ways to work around the easy rip.
If its mp3's you want on it you can drag and drop them into the opal folder.
If you want smv video files you need to. you need two programs.
1st program is http://www.any-dvd-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ (free program)
It lets you change all video formats to mpeg is the setting I like then after its an mpeg.
You use http://www.soft29.com/freeware/smv_converter.htm (free Program)
It converts the files to smv (video file that Opal accepts)

How do I reset my RCA Opal 8GB mp3?

Not sure what to do about the "not turning on" part, but I have a solution to my problem which was the same as a few other people.

I called 800-878-5779 option #5 (which is their customer service phone number that apparently doesn't appear in any of the materials that were in my package, or in any convenient place on their website).

I have a M4208RD-B which was stuck on "initilizing" and not being recognized by my computer.
According to the customer service folks, I needed a firmware update which seems only to be available through a magical email that they sent to me. The email also contains instructions on how to upload the firmware through a series of timed button pushes.

Here are the instructions included in my email:

M42- Initializing problem or not powering on:
Download firmware upgrade included in this email
Hold play/pause button for 15 seconds
Hold menu button for 10 seconds
Attach M4204 via USB cable while holding play/pause button
This should start the firmware upgrade
Possible an error message of “cant write to disk” will pop up
Firmware upgrade will end with error do not close
Go to My Computer find the drive that holds the MP3 player
Right click scroll down to format, format the player
Run firmware upgrade again

The firmware that they sent me in the email was v 1.7.2.0, which is not listed under the Opal 4208 on the website. It is under the 4204 player on the website.
As you can see in the above email that they sent to me, I got the firmware update for the 4204. I would think that the update on the website is the same as the one that they sent me in the email, but I'm not 100% sure. To be 100% you could just call the 800 number and get your own email.

Hope this helps.

Firmware upgrade not working

Are you absolutely sure that you loaded the firmware for your correct model #? Try downloading the auto-updater software and see if it will take the upgrade on the next go around.

If not, that player is fried - update during firmware upgrade is no good. Call rCA to see if you are still in warranty.

Usually the "50MB of space needed to operate error" is easy to fix, but also most other manufacturers have a specific FAQ on their website that tells you how to fix it. RCA did not have anything like that for this model. also, most other manf. have a recovery tool of some kind - absent on this model.

Needs a firmware update - sometimes a reformat can corrupt the original database - a firm upgrade will reload it - RCA's website will have the upgrade
