Question about Panasonic DMR-EZ47V DVD Recorder/VCR
The original remote control is nonfunctional. can i operate the unit without it? i do have the manual.
Many DVD recorders need the remote for a few functions like menu and setup. The remote part # is EUR7659T80 in the US. You can order parts here . it costs about $35 US. Save yourself some headaches.

if you're checking online retailers, you may be able to get the remote directly from Panasonic Parts. If you have a manual, look under the accessory list and get the part number - if you don't have the manual, the part number is EUR7659T80 and the phone number to the parts dept is 1-800-332-5368. If you purchased the unit as an open box, you would be charged for the remote as it's not covered by warranty. If it was a new unit and you're within 30 days of purchase, they can process a remote exchange if you contact the customer call center at 800-211-7262.

The service manual says that:
U61 = The unit is carrying its recovery process (with no disk in the tray) . If there is a disk remove it and restart the unit . This is the message that appears when the system's firmware crashed because of an incorrect command - normal operating procedure, just wait for it to finish. If the message doesn't goes away in 10 minutes after a power cycle you should force it: press the Ch UP and Ch DOWN buttons until the DVB Auto-Setup message appears on the screen.
If nothing you do has an effect and you haven't done anything to the unit when this message appeared then the fault is hardware - the processor of the unit has failed. The only way to fix that is to replace the mainboard. But that would cost about $175, more than a new unit, so it's time for a new one.
