Laptop shuts down often when using battery power

My daughter has a V3000 that is approx 2 years old. For the past several months, when she is using battery power, the laptop will shut down. She is using the bulky extended life battery. Is this a battery problem? Or something else?

Thanks
Steve

Hi,

Often, this would be a battery problem given the age of the laptop. A way to verify is if the AC adapter/charger is plugged in and the problem persist, then it would be "something else".

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Make your Lithium Laptop Battery last longer.

Hello folks,

Although I usually offer advice on backing up files or recovering them, I have been asked a lot lately how my 3 year old laptop still runs 1:45mins on a standard battery when many peoples 1-2 year old laptops can barely last an hour.

Simply put, most people do one of two things wrong. Both are common misconceptions and easy to remedy. First I've heard countless people tell me they pop the battery out of their laptop and toss it in the desk drawer until needed, often months. Second I have been told by more people than I can count that they leave their laptop plugged in 24/7 for most of the year.

Bottom line, although popping it out and leaving it in the drawer is less harmful to it's lifespan, both ideas are wrong.

The shelf life of most unused lithium batteries is shorter when unused than ones being used properly. The lifespan of a battery that is constantly being trickle charged is even shorter.

Most batteries in modern laptops are 4-6 cells, designed to give about 2 hours of charge and should last 3-5 years with charge life starting to degrade in the third year.

A "stored battery" has only 3 years of shelf life due to extended times sitting discharged and one that is trickle charged 24/7 may burn out in as little as a year.

Many laptop manufacturers have taken measures to improve this but ultimately the best thing for your battery is to use it. If you currently run you laptop plugged in 24/7, unplug it every night after you shut it off, then when you start it in the morning, let it run an hour before plugging it back in. This will give the battery both down time and exercise.

If your battery is in a drawer somewhere for safe keeping, put it back in the laptop, run it down then charge it over night and run it down then recharge it one more time. Store it back in the drawer charged and repeat the cycle at least once a month.

These tips will help drastically improve you batteries performance over time. My 3 year old laptop only ever got 2 hours of battery life and still gets 1:45 with no power saving measures, give it a try.

For the past three weeks i recognised that my laptop would cut off without being shut down and takes a while when i try to start it up again even though its plugged in the the power outlet. Can you tell...

I believe that it might be because the laptop is overheating. Just like a car, when something is worked too hard it will shut itself off. Considering that the battery is dead, I suppose that it's over 2-3 years old. Which can be a prime candidate for overheating.

This can be remedied by getting a laptop docking fan. They are inexpensive. Usually about $20-25. This reduces heat, and will give you a better user experience. Including, not shutting off on you.

Thanks.

Somehow, my three-year-old must have locked the keys on our Toshiba Satellite L505D laptop. How do I unlock them? We have a wireless mouse for it, which I can still use.

Don't blame your daughter ;) some Toshiba laptops have this keyboard problem. seems the easiest remedy is;
  • Shut down.
  • Remove the battery and the AC power.
  • Wait for 5 - 10 minutes or hold the power button depressed for about ten seconds.
  • Put the battery and power back.
  • Turn on the computer.
I believe there is an updated driver for the keyboard you can download from the Toshiba support website that may may prevent this from recurring.

Hope this helps ;)

My Compaq Presario V3000 laptop will not power up.

Power drain would be a better solution in this case.
1.first shut down the comp
2.unplug the charger
3. remove the battery
and after press and hold the power button for 60 seconds without any charger and the battery. After the 60 seconds replug the battery and the charger and turn the computer

Dell Vostro 1000 shut down and won't turn back on

nope, it is your dc power regulator board. you will note this happens if the battery is in or out of the laptop. that is the key test. some regulators are on the main board and some are seperate for this reason. I think the vostro though is on the main board. A little board re-work will resolve this issue after replacing some components, but this is way beyond a home user's ability.. trust me on this. Sorry for the bad news. Thanks!

Thinkpad T61 Battery Problem

your battery may suffer from'memory-effect'
due to overcharging several times.

boot up as usual, switch laptop to standby-mode
and let it switched on until it shuts down automatically.
this will help to drain the battery to a very low level.
recharge battery until full capacity while laptop is still shut off, boot and measure time until it switches off again.
You may have increased battery capacity this way a bit! If this does not help, get a new one with a better capacity and remove battery when your using laptop at home for a longer time(this will prevent future overcharging), rely an ac/dc adaptor instead, laptop will funtion anyway.

IBM Thinkpad A22e Shutdown early on full battery

First, you should clean the battery terminals. You can scratch the terminals with a metal and then charge. Secondly, you should change your battery, that is, buy a new battery.
