The display settings can be programmed with different brightness settings during day time or night time in auto mode. Meaning, you can have 2-3 brightness setting during the day at 50% at 7 a.m., 80% at 10 a.m. and 100% at 1 p.m.

The nuvi 700 series uses time for brightness set up when in auto mode. So don't be surprise if the brightness setting changes during day or night since brightness setting varies from individual users.

How I found this was on monday morning. Noon time sunday, I went to work and set brightness setting to 100%. At dusk, it went to night mode at 10% brightness as programmed. Monday morning turned on my 760 and check brightness setting. It was 80%. I said hmmm. I just change my settings to 100% around noon yesterday. Decided to wait until noon time yesterday and see what happens. Sure enough, display settings was now at 100%.

My findings concludes that the garmin 700 series with 2.5 software version display settings are base on time and remembers the brightness setting in that given time and can have multiple settings during the day where you have it less brighter at at 50% at 6 .am., 80% at 9 a.m., 100% at 12 noon, 60% at 3 or 4 p.m. until it goes to night mode.

This may also be possible to other models as well.
seems it might depend on what time of day you change the brightness setting as garmins' units reportedly keep that time in thier setting even thought it isnt offered.

Press the reset switch to reset the garmin, is the backlight turned off in the settings or is it possibly faulty?

Use a external light to see what is on the screen, try to naviage in the menus and check your backlight settings.

White Screen, Video is readable but faint

Any time there is a distortion in the picture/graphics on the screen, this is an indication of a defective LCD display. LCD displays can fail even if the screen isn't cracked. It sounds like the graphics are washed out. More info on defective LCD displays can be found here:

Download and run the Garmin WebUpdater to install or reinstall the latest software (firmware). This will usually fix most issues.

You may also want to contact Garmin Support for assistance.

  2. Press the mode button to access the Main Menu.
  3. Select Setting > System > Display > Contrast.
  4. Now press the enter button and continue pressing the arrows up or down to change the contrast.

Garmin GPSmap 76 locks up once satellite acquisition is complete.

Does the screen go blank with a faint vertical line (top to bottom)? If so, I had the same problem (blank screen, vertical line). After speaking with Garmin, I was told to make sure I was using the latest software version, and to turn off the WAAS function. Disable it for now, because the WAAS signal, coming from the satellite, has changed, and Garmin has not yet published a remedy to correct this problem. A fix should be out in a software update, sometime in the future, hopefully. I also did the software update, to the latest version 4.0. The unit performs perfectly now, however, the accuracy is not quite as good, due to the lack of WAAS. Good Luck!!

Faint screen image

when you first power on using lower right (power) button, wait 6 seconds for the intro screen to finish. The upper left (up) button increases screen contrast. Hold this one down for a few seconds and the screen should darken. The middle left (down) button decreases contrast.

If this doesn't work, try turning off by holding the power button.
Hold down upper left AND upper right while turning unit on. This initiates diagnostic mode and contrast is darker by default. Bottom of screen is a button test area which darkens a symbol for each successful button press. Use it to diagnose a button problem. Turn off power and on again to leave diagnostic mode.

I wish you success playing with the Etrex.
