The laptop is running fine, but the wireless adapter doesn't turn on for the computer to search for an available network. I am in range of the wireless network. Is the some setting that needs to be adjusted or what?

It is not the problem with the router. It is the problem with the wireless adapter on your computer. Open Network connections and look for Wireless network connection. If it is not there then open the Device Manager and look for Wireless network adapter under Network adapters. It seems that wireless adapter on your computer is not working or it is not detected by your computer. If you have external wireless adapter then unplug it and replug it.
If it's not seeing wifi networks, more than likely, there is something wrong with the adapter. Try these steps:
1.) Look for a WIFI switch on the side or front of your laptop and make sure it is set to the ON position.
2.) Check Device Manager to make sure the driver is installed and working. If it's not, uninstall and reinstall.
3.) Go into Network Connections and make sure the Wireless Connection is set to Enable.
4.) If none of that works, perform a System Restore to a time when everything was working.
5.) If this doesn't work, you need a WIFI adapter replacement.
I hope this is helpful and thanks for using Fixya!
Are you using the WZC on your WinXP computer of the wireless adapter's software utility? Try to reboot the computer and check on the system tray if you will see the computer icon with a red X, right click it and select view available wireless networks, if it cannot see anything... Go to Start, All Programs and look for anything that pertains to wireless adapters open the utility and refresh the list of wireless networks available.... if you see your wireless network name, select it and hit connect
first check the wireless switch on your laptop if it`s turned on.check if wieless network is actually available where you are trying to connect,if any other wireless device can go online wirelessly.check device manager and uninstall it and install it again and if still it doesn`t work then it`s time to replace the device.
First u need to make sure ur adapter is installed correctly.
1. Click on Start-->Run-->Type in "devmgmt.msc"
which will open device manager.
Under device manager , u should find network adapters, make sure ur adapter is listed under it without any yellow exclamation mark or red cross which would mean that the drivers are not installed correctly or the adapter is disabled. In this case u need to reinstall the drivers via the CD.
2. Secondly u need to goto start-->run-->type in "msconfig"
which will open the system configuration window. Now under the "startup" TAB. Find the service for ur wireless card and disable it by unchecking it and then apply the settings and OK.
Reboot computer once
3. After reboot, goto start-->run-->type in "services.msc"
It will open the services windows . Find an option for wireless zero configuration . Rt click on it and start it.
4. Goto start-->run-->type in "ncpa.cpl"
It will open network connections window.
Rt click on Wireless network conection and enable it .
If it is already enabled , then rt click on it again and click on "View available wireless connections"
It will give u a list of all the wireless connections available in ur area.
Click on the one which is ur connection and then click on connect.
It might ask u for a wireless key if it is a secure connection. Enter the key and it should all work fine.
