Garage door won't close.

Garage door moves 2-3 inches in colse direction then reverses and returns to starting position. Will respond the same way if control button is held down. There is no flashing light on control button. I have tried hitting the reset button.

Gargage door opens fine. When you press button to close it, it moves about two (2) inches and goes back open. Is there a rest I need to press to get this to work properly?

Same problem. Sears garage door opener, goes down 5-6 inches than stays open. Fixed it myself one time by releasing the door and closing manually then reattaching to the lift. It worked for a couple of weeks. Nothing to do with the sensor. When there's something blocking a sensor, the garage door comes down about half-way and then goes back up. This is more like a stuttering kind of thing. Stupid door.

After replacing the worm gear and main drive gear on my Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener I found that my door moved about 4 inches stopped and reversed the same distance. I checked all the settings and everything seems OK. What fixed the problem was I released the two allen set screws on the end of the motor shaft and pulled tha motor shaft toward me. When I replaced the black plastic cap that looks like a pill cap top on the end of the shaft this corrected the depth setting that cap rotated through the RPM sensor. I set the limit settings (up and down) on the side of the opener and reset the force pots marked (KC) to mid range.
the door now works. I hope this helps. I also checked and eliminated the door sensors by putting a box in the beem this inhibited any movemnet at all, so I knew it wasn't the door sensors as there was at least 4 incheds of movement prior to the box and nothing with the box.

Your safety sensors may not be lined up or functional. They can be found at ground level facing each other like 2 small cameras.

Make sure all the connections are tight on the rear of the motor housing. The terminals where all those white wires go must be tight. Also make sure the plug into the wall is snug and not sloppy.

If when closing the door it reverses to the open position and the main light flashes 10 times it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the small light on each sensor is on and not flickering ever so slightly. (check closely) Tweak them a little even though they may seem to be okay. Check for 5vdc between terminals 2 and 3 on the rear of the motor unit. If there is no voltage or if it is greater than 6vdc the logic board is bad.

If the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Make sure the lights on the sensors are both on and not flickering. Tweak them if necessary. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have bad sensors or the wiring to them.

Garage door closes and then opens immediately.

On the back of the motor unit you will find a control 'down force'. Turn this about 1/4 turn and try. This is for the reversing after moving a foot or so. Do not increase this control too much as it affects the safety.

If the door is hitting the floor and then reversing you will need to adjust the 'down limit' which is on the side of the motor unit. It takes a small screwdriver and you need to turn this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will be necessary and remember if you run the motor too much a thermal switch will shut it off and you will have to wait 15 to 30 minutes for it to cool. This is normal so you will not be hurting anything.

Garage opener only travels about 12"

Sounds like something is binding causing the safety feature to activate the same as if it hit something. Bring the motor down to the point where this happens and pull the plug. At this point turn the motor manually and attempt to find the obstruction. You can also confirm this by changing the sensitivity so as to almost cancel it. Don't leave it that way, the safety feature is to protect anything it might hit as well as the opener itself. Do this only for diagnostics only and be ready to kill the power.

Door opens after closing

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem but if the door is hitting the floor and reversing and the main light is not flashing then the door is closing too far and the safety thinks it has hit something. On the side of the motor unit you will find 2 controls. One of these is the 'down limit'. Turn this in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover until the door closes but does not reverse.
