SOURCE: frost forms in freezer, blocking vents so temp in both freezer and fridge is warmer than normal

You have an issue with the defrost system, either the timer, thermostat or heating element. Probably the defrost timer refer to the manual to find it. If you don't have the manual check the makers web site for a parts breakdown. You should be able to put it into defrost manually by turning the knob and see if that helps. You may need to do this sevral times as it only stays in defrost for a little over twnety minutes and run cycle for 6,8 or ten hours. If the ice build up is heavy then twenty minutes may not do the trick thus the need for repated defrost cycles. If it does the trick replace the timer. If not check the thermostat and heater element.

SOURCE: I have a kenmore elite

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.
The humming noise your hearing is the evaporator fan blades striking the ice build up on the evaporator. The fact that you have ice build up is a sure sign your refrigerator is not defrosting.
The door switch controls power to the evaporator fan.

I am going to use this model number 106.57071791 as a parts reference that MAY be different from your actual model but it is close. This model is a mechanical control refrigerator. You may have the electronic control version.

Take a look at item 6 this link:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10657071791/0582/0165000/P8100197/00012?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=

It will be located in the top left of center & front of your fresh food compartment. It will be circular and will have 2 tabs on it with an incline so that if you were to rotate the tabs with something flat it would only turn ONE direction.

Either use your finger nail or something flat to SLOWLY rotate that until you hear an audible click. (Everyting stops but the lights) This is initiating an automatic defrost cycle. After about an hour come back and check to see if your refrigerator has re-started. If it has not restarted there is definately a problem with the automtic defrost circuit. That can be the timer (listed above), The defrost element under the evaporator, the Bi-metal thermostat on the evaporator or wiring.

All parts can be found via this link / section
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-10657071791/0582/0165000?pathTaken=

If none of the links work go to http://www.searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number where it says find it fast and choose model search.

I guessed at the model number so if this does not resemble your refrigerator or you have the electonic control board type refrigerator please respond with your model number.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Kelly

SOURCE: Freezer too cold, has frost on food and frig is

There should be separate temperature controls for each side correct?First, try turning the freezer side to a warmer temperature setting. Not just a little but a lot.It takes about 24 hours for it to adjust to the new temperature, but you can check on it every couple of hours. If nothing changes,it is most likely the thermocouple within the freezer half.It basically reads what temperatureyou want, reads what the current temperature is,and tells the refrigerator when to send more cold air.If there is a noticeable change,we will have to look elsewhere.A thermocouple is basically a metal rod with 2 leads coming out of it into the back of the refrigerator somewhere. It may also be small sometimes,or hidden under a plastic cover.Google thermocouple and it should show some pictures of it.They are for the most part the same with only slight variations in length or width.Greg

SOURCE: Kenmore Elite Coldspot, made 2005,

NOTE: This
is a multi-solution answer since I don't have all the tech from your question to pinpoint your problem
But the solution is in here generically, if you read and study the solutions very, very carefully.
First I would check cold control. Thats where you turn it off, if your temp is not warm. it can
be defective and not shutting off. If your temp is warm proceed with the following.
I would check the fan in the freezer. Listen to see if it is running
It moves air to the ref from the freezer
Then check to see if FREEZER CONTROL is turned WARMER WHICH MAKES THE REF COLDER AND VICE-VERSA. SEE?
The ref. temp should be about 33-35
The Freezer temp should be 0 to 10 Any thing below these temps is overkill and a waste of elect
The higher the number you turn it up to is the coldest
But is probably a common defrost problem The ice build up
is not being melted by the defrost system. The fan can't blow through the coils into the fridge.
Take out back panel of freezer to check for ice buildup. The coils should be clean.
There are three components to a defrost system- a heater, heater thermostat, and a timer unless you have a defrost electronic card.
Its best handled by a Technician but you could possibly do it by taking your model number to the nearest appliance parts store and asking for the parts. They are mostly located in freezer ,behind back panel on freezer coils.except the card which is usually located in ref The parts store will have info
Also check fan undernearh Ref in the rear
Clean condenser coils underneath
Make sure back cover is on the fridge. Some take them off and throw them away.
make one out of cardboard if its gone, using the holes of the old one.

My fridge part of fridge/freezer doesn't work

Post the model number of the refrigerator. Defrost freezer behind where the cold air circulates with a hair drier. (unplug power first!) Most times when a refrigerator side stops cooling it is because the freezer evaporator behind the panel in the back of freezer (most times) has become blocked by frost=> SEE PHOTO Most times the panel before you see the frosted covering the evaporator will begin to show a layer of frost building=> SEE PHOTO (Click each photo to enlarge.) Sometimes the fresh food section of the refrigerator side will warm because ice or frost will block the damper from moving that regulates temperatures in the fresh food section. Sometimes the damper is defective and sometimes the sensor that controls the damper movement is defective. For these reasons it is important that you provide your model numbers so someone knows just what type refrigerator you have to cover all of the possibilities of what may be wrong causing the warming of the fresh food section and soon the freezer section will also begin to warm. The most likely cause are the defrost control, ADC Adaptive Defrost Control, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, air damper and air damper sensors in that order. Let me know what you have and I will try to identify just what may be happening, Thanks Sea Breeze

Fridge is cold, freezer is not

Please look into the freezer for frost build-up on the rear wall. If you are having a defrost problem it may limit the freezer temperature and still be cold enough for the fresh food section to remain at safe temperatures but not for long before freezer and fresh food section warms because frost blocks airflow and the evaporator is unable to keep everything cold because of frost build-up. I don't have your model number so I will list the parts that may need to be replaced. The defrost control=> 12002754 Frost Kit, defrost thermostat and 67002493 Defrost Heater Assembly

67003426 Defrost Thermostat

For testing of the defrost thermosat and defrost heater refer to the same page as the parts, If these parts are good the the 12002754 Frost Kit, could be defective. The 12002754 Frost Kit,
can be found in the control panel inside the fresh food compartment. Let me know if you have questions and also if you are not having a defrost problem, Thanks Sea Breeze

Sound allot like there is a serious air leak....Is the door sealed good? You also have a defrost drain line plugged up behind the freezer panel you will need to clear that out with hot water after removing all the ice. watch this video to see how to replace the defrost thermosthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-h541_14ZE

Frosting up in the freezer and not cooling in the food compartment kenmore 363.9557852

It sounds like you have a defrost problem.

All the cooling for both sections takes place in the freezer behind the back wall. A fan back there distributes the cold air throughout the freezer and fresh food section. Every 8 - 10 hours a heater comes on for about 20 minutes to eliminate the frost from the evaporator coils back there. If this defrost cycle fails the frost will build up to a point of no air flow so the fresh food side and most of the freezer start to warm up.

The best way to take care of this is to turn it off and unload the freezer, take the shelves out and the screws holding the back panel inside the freezer out. Remove the back panel from the freezer. Use hot water and a hair dryer to unthaw the ice and frost, you will need lots of towels as the melting will bring lots of water on to the floor. Once the frost is gone you will need to install this part WR51X443. The picture below shows it. The kit contains new heaters and thermostat.

Model 106.54512300 freezer is not freezing food,

Check the obvious, the coils underneath need to be cleaned, and the fan needs to be running. And check to see if there is a heavy frost on the back wall inside the freezer. If there is it could indicate a defrosting problem. Both will cause the temperature to rise. Also, be sure the fan in the freezer is running.

Kenmore refrigerator-- freezer is working fine. Refrigerator is freezing food. I changed the temp dials to send coldest air to freezer. Food is still freezing any suggestions.

I need the model number that Sears put on the fresh food section door to confirm. Until I know which model you have I need to assume that it has an electrically controlled damper between the freezer and 2 temperature controls. I also have to assume that they both are connected by their wiring to a Adaptive Defrost Control. If one of the three things listed is not working then that part will need replaced. Now there are cases when the damper door becomes stuck and you would need to unplug the power and open the rear panel in the back of freezer to see if frost or ice has the damper stuck wide open. Sears numbers look like this for example 231.564897 bottom of fresh food door behind door seal and near floor kick plate, Let me know what you find and I will be happy to help you, Thanks, Sea Breeze
