Question about Western Digital (WD3200JS) 320 GB Hard Drive

11 Answers

WD hd won't start up when turned on until you plug into usb

I have installed a internal 320gb wd hd in a hdd player case. when power turned on the hd does not spin unless I connect a usb lead to computer to use it as a external hd to load video file into it. However when I used it later to play movies the player does not see the hd because it does not spin when power is turned on. I have to use my on off button on the remote to make it spin and then it detects the hd and I can play movies. Why does hd fails to spin when power is turned on and how can I get around this problem to use it as hdd player ?

It's a Western Digital brand model number WD3200AAJB

  • flextech Nov 04, 2008

No it does occassionally start spinning when you turn it on. I was advised that it may be my 12VDC supply but the power supply that came with it gives 12VDC at 2A. I checked output which gives me 12VDC but when to turn on the HD it tries to start as you can hear clicking sounds and the output voltage actually reads higher and fluctuates at about 13.5VDC to 14.5VDC ?

  • flextech Nov 04, 2008

Also when the HD does run either when I watch movie or accessing files from computer the HD appears to stop spinning as either the movie stops and freezes or computer says that HD disconnected and cannot copy remaining file from computer,

  • flextech Nov 04, 2008

HD is set to master mode as it is stand alone and works majority of the time. It simply fails to start up most of the time when you turn power on however it will always syart with USB plugged in.

  • flextech Nov 04, 2008

Done that as suggested by WD. It still fails to start up when turned on with data cable removed. Power cable is OK.

  • flextech Nov 04, 2008

The HDD behaves like this when used as either a player without USB to computer or connected to computer to copy files from it. In either case after HD been running for a period of time which could be anytime after 20 min or more it appears to just stop spinning in which case movie stops running or it disconnects from computer. It does run once it does spin.

I tried just about everything. Disk clean up, disk defrag, disk fix and no difference. Could it be something in the hd power feed on pcb. Voltage readings seems to fluctuate about 13.5vdc - 14.5vdc while it is trying to start up, you can hear hd clicking while attempting to start up. This is strange as power supply reads 12.5vdc on no load i.e. when power is not turned on via hd switch. I think there is something weird going on in hdd case pcb. Should I try some resoldering of connections around power feed tracks on pcb? what are your views about this direction ?

  • flextech Nov 05, 2008

I am going to try a bit of resoldering connections on hd pcb in power rail area and will keep you posted.

Do you mean BIOS settings of the HD in player case or the computer.

Check your BIOS settings to see if you have 'prefetch' settings available for your hard drive. This helps resolve access sychronization issues.

Check for the available space of your hard disk drive it might be nearly full already.
also try to minimize the number of time you disconnect and reconnect the drive to your computer, often reconnection causes the sockets to have loose contact. especially when it uses SATA not the IDE cable.
try to put a new cable.
try to check also your voltage ratings, its not normal for it to reach 14.5V, it could cause greater to your whole unit. use an Automatic Voltage Regulator ( which can maintain your AC level from 105-115 or 210-230 volts)

Hi,
As i get from the description given by you, If the hdd is giving clicking sound when it tries to spin and if the movies freeze as well when played the Harddrive is going bad. The problem can be the drive platter. Wester Digital generally provided 3 year warranty on all its hardrives and 5 years on some models.
You can contact wester digital

This is usually cause by some problem with the hard disk inside that enclosure player that you have, by the way have you tried formatting this hard drive and check if that will fix the problem....make sure you copy first all the files inside it before formatting....

Ok maybe your computer is a bit slow there are issues with slow computers
this may be taking a load on your processor and motherboard

this problem could also be because of the connections in Your hdd player

behind the player you will have a segment which has all the connections make sure that these areOK

First try setting the hard disk jumper to master mode, then try cable select, then slave.
Usually hard disk players, and enclosures will work fine only with one of the MCS settings (master/cable/slave).

Some hdd player case cannot recognise just any harddrive, as the bios installed on the player does not have built in information for all brands, in this case replace the hard disk with same brand as original one.

Make sure the USB lead is connected to the computer before turning it ON.

if you lose access to the HDD after a period of time, the HDD Player case is putting the HDD to sleep mode (check the case if it has such feature)

better if you have another computer to test the unit

Hi,

Depending on the model/design, this could be a feature rather than as a defect or limitation. The idea is power saving and reduction of the heat generated. Depending whether it is SATA or IDE, there could possibly be a wake-up/spin pin. This feature is similarly used by the Power Option Properties of Windows to "Turn Off Harddisk" after a pre-determine time has elapsed on inactivity. The trick then would be to identify this pin and hardwire a triggering resistor to either pullup or down (as may be needed).

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back and confirm if it is a Western Digital WD3200JS, how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Alternately, you can determine what pin(s) changes state when you press on the remote. Ideally of course, a logic probe would have to be use in the event that it is not a simple DC bias.

it is also possible that the hdd works with the usb support .

  • fixexpert Oct 27, 2008

if it is using the external power supply or trying to use the drive from bus power. it won't work because there isn't enough power. You need an external power source in order for the drive be spin up properly.

  • fixexpert Oct 27, 2008

12V DC at 2A should be enough as u said u hve it in ur comment but still check out with the meter to meet exact requirement

When I plug my 320G WD Elements there is no WD icon on my windows or my computer window. thanks

Have you used this HDD before?, it this is the first time?

Sometimes you have to install the WD Smartware Software. In the case of the 320G, which are the first HDD released, The computer should detect them automatically.

Try with another USB port. Do not use a USB multiport because it won't power the HD.

If it doesn't work on your computer, try it on another one. This way you can discard the possibility that the HDD is damaged.

Hi i`ve just bought the wd elements 320gb yesterday. the problem is that i put the usb in and the light on the product is on but thats all. its not installing and i cant find it on my computer.

The obvious question first is the drive connected with the provided AC adapter?

Are you connecting it directly to a USB port or powered USB Hub? This is not important in external hard drives but it does on portable HD. But just in case keep this in mind.

Other thing is that you have to install the WD Smartware software.

If nothing works, try it on another computer.

If it works, must be a USB port problem.

God Bless You!

Hi,

It seems that your Harddrive has problems with internal Micro USB connector. WD, Transcend and Seagate brands are having such kind of problems.

Try to adjust the micro usb cable in such a way that your data transfer or ongoing activity will not hamper. Else to have perfect solution on your problem, backup complete data from the HDD and hand-over the HDD to the nearest WD technical department.

They may diagnose the issue and if not resolvable, will handover new WD Harddrive.

How do i combine my C drive with my Wd my cpu is full and my wd is empty I wanted to know if its possible to combine them so i dont have to keep moving everything after it installs

It is easier, and safer to just move all your documents, videos and music to the WD HDD.just drag and drop from 1 to the other.
click on my computer and open the WD Hdd. create a folder named "My Documents"
click on my computer again, leaving the 1st window open and select drive "c" or "my documents" on drive "c" anad literally drag and drop the folders accross by left clicking on the folder and dragging to the wd hdd and relasing the button.

Connect the external disk-drive to another computer.
If it still is not recognized, then you have a problem:
* the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the case is faulty,
* the disk-drive inside the case is faulty.

If the former, disassemble the casing, and extract the disk-drive,
and temporarily connect it as an "internal" and "slave" disk-drive to your desktop, and see if you can read the files.

WD 500gb external HD shuts down when plugged into USB port

Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.

see
YouTube - How To: Take Apart A Western Digital My Book Enclosure

If unit is under warranty see : WD Support > Warranty Services > End User > Warranty Policy.

Note any SATA external enclosure willl work wthe same with the internal WD HD.

Hooking up the WD Passport to a USB enabled CD/DVD player possible?

hmmm...it may just be a capacity and interface issue, with the flash drive being more 'accessible' through the USB interface than the wd passport.

Big issue..is the WD on USB 2.0, and the CD/DVD on USB 1.0?
