I had a Maxtor Basics 160GB external HDD. Plug and play immediately with my Sony Vaio, but can't seem to get it work with my Compaq Presario V3000. It immediately emits a beeping sound no matter which USB i plug it. And my Compaq can't detect it, it lags slightly after connected to the MB 160GB.

My external has been working fine, took my comp on vacation and when i got back to plug the external back in it doesnt start up. All i hear is a faint clicking, and when i unplug the USB cable and reconnect my comp at first gave me a Code 10 error. I uninstalled the drivers for it but now cant find any drivers for the 3200 200G HD im only finding 3000, 3100 for Win98, or 5000. Ive been seeing on-line that it may have something to do with SP3. Any ideas where to get the drivers? Will the Win98 3100 driver work? im running XP. Im hoping that i can get this solved as i have important info on it that i cant lose.

I have the same problem with an Iomega. After searching for a while i finally found this case report:

It seems that there is an "Onboard controller failure. It's not putting the drives in JBOD and only displaying one physical drive to your computer. You need to contact technical support about a replacement."
So it seems to be software but it still is a pain in the **** to repair/replace. But maxtor/iomega can charge whatever for a repair because your data is priceless right? sucks

The heads are riding on the platers. The drive is dead and not worth trying to fix. If there is data on it that you simply can not lose do a google search for "data recovery failed harddrive". The rule of thumb for a decent lad that can do this is price, if it costs less then 75$ per meg they probably are not that good.

The hard disk inside it doesn't responds to the controller - hardware failure, the disk has failed.
Nothing can fix that, your unit is truly dead and you need a new one.

reboot the laptop, reseat the cables, and try connecting the drive to different usb port. if that still doesn't work, most likely the drive has gone bad.

Beeping, not showing on computer

Its beeping because its damaged! sad to say but the beeping is an error code! the other downside is hard drives are hard to repair so you may need to buy a new one.

Musical tones from Maxtor Diamondmax 10 Model 6V250F0

All hard drives are about as delicate as an egg when they're running. It's dead. You can pay a data recovery company to retrieve what little of the data is still intact, but it will cost you a lot of money - not worth it unless there's something particularely precious on it.

Whether the beep is an actual speaker inside the drive that beeps when a serious error is detected, or if it is just a side-effect of the heads scraping on the platters, is of little importance.

For your next drive, buy a good one. I buy almost exclusively from Seagate and WD. Maxtor just doesn't make good hard drives.
