Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive
It now makes a beeping noise like a mobile phone dead tone and is not recoginsed by either my Mac or PC.
I have the same problem with an Iomega. After searching for a while i finally found this case report:
It seems that there is an "Onboard controller failure. It's not putting the drives in JBOD and only displaying one physical drive to your computer. You need to contact technical support about a replacement."
So it seems to be software but it still is a pain in the **** to repair/replace. But maxtor/iomega can charge whatever for a repair because your data is priceless right? sucks

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.

The heads are riding on the platers. The drive is dead and not worth trying to fix. If there is data on it that you simply can not lose do a google search for "data recovery failed harddrive". The rule of thumb for a decent lad that can do this is price, if it costs less then 75$ per meg they probably are not that good.
