SOURCE: yamaha k-720 cassette deck

This unit may have a tape tension sensor. If that sensor isn't working properly, the mechanism always thinks the tape has reached the end during play/record. Sitting unused could allow some grease on the sensor mechanism to harden which would disable it.

The sensor probably isn't used during FF/REW.

SOURCE: Downloading an instruction manual for the K-700 Cassette Deck

Make sure you have the correct model # and go to the Yamaha web site. There is no K-700 but there is a K-720 (I have this tape deck).

SOURCE: I have a Kenwood KX

The flywheel belt would have broken or gone slack and fallen off the motor pulley. You can confirm this by opening the top and looking inside. If you can shake the machine holding it upside down the belt might even fall off.Replacing the belt is a tricky job. Its like putting back a bicycle chain except there is a metal plate behind the flywheel and your hand won't go there.

Looking for schematic for Kenwood KX-55 stereo cassette tape deck

These dual cassette deck are rarely worth he effort to put repair time into. I checked Hi Fi Engine and they did not have anything. Is it worth a $100 repair bill? if not then look for a good solid single deck.

Technics M14 cassette deck has hum. Bought used and had hum but I got it to go away by switching the tape select dial to metal, etc. but hum came back later. I'm thinking ground or a wire to that switch. ...

If the hum is audible without monitoring a tape playback it has nothing to do with the oxide formulation or any aspect of the media.

Determine the conditions present whenever the hum is present:

Player just turned ON?
Tape deck Playing or Paused?
Tape deck Recording or Paused?
"Tape" selected at the receiver?
Any source selected?

What switch are you referring to? You could have a floating ground or shield through a Tape Monitor or other control. Audio cables between the Deck and the receiver could be faulty or require reseating with a twisting motiuon to remove oxide build-up.

Hum can enter any unshielded cable running near any motor, magnetic field or some light sources. Sometimes simply reversing the polarity of an AC power cord will cure it.

The tape runs a bit fast on play mode. Is there an adjustment for this or is it a board or motor problem.

Sometimes the motor has a control pot on the top. You might find it under a label, it will be only a small circular hole.
Otherwise trace the wires from the motor back to the PC board, you should see a Pot for the speed there.

Please bear in mind that if it is a second hand machine somebody could have replaced the motor with the wrong type.
