Question about Pressure Washers

Open Question

B & D PW1500 does not start its motor

I acquired the above power-jet cleaner about 2 years ago. It has only been used 4 or 5 times. The motor does not engage when the switch is pressed. (with power on and water on). Initially there was a long delay before the motor came on then the motor stayed on after the trigger was released..

Thank you Mr Fixit. I apologise if I did not express my thanks for the trouble you went to. As I live in South Africa, your help-line was not appropriate. I have however managed to sort the problem out with B and D in Cape Town.

SOURCE: the motor is pulsing on and off without the trigger being pressed

It is probably sucking air on one of the connections or around one of the fittings at the regulator. You can also turn the pressure up allittle on the regulator, that might stop it also. Make sure the clamps on the hoses going to the regulator is tite. Also it could be that the regulator is just bypassing water and if it has air in it it will pulsate.

SOURCE: Pressure washer sputters and stalls when trigger is engaged

Hi k2times01
It is a always a good idea to clean out the gas tank and use new fuel, however, this sounds like an RPM problem. Try adjusting the RPM up a tad and see if it runs better when you load it. If the RPM isn't the problem, you may have to clean the carburetor thoroughly.

SOURCE: Karcher 3.97M Short cycles after trigger is released.

Dear csdamman,
There is a valve called the spill-valve. It is often called the control valve. This valve activates the micro-switch. When the gun is released, pressure builds up and compresses this spill valve. At the same time it puts off the micro-switch. This will then stop the machine. Now when the spill valve is faulty it cannot hold compreesion under pressure so it starts de-compressing and starts the machine again. This goes on in a cycle as you explained. So you have to change the spill valve. If the spill valve that operates the micro-switch is part of the upper head,...then the whole head must be renewed. Myself I rarely service Spill Valves. The best thing is to renew it. From your explanation it seems that you did not take notice of this Spill-Valve. Infact when you mentioned Pressure Switch, I do not know if you are refering to the spill valve. If you are....then saying that the Pressure Switch moves and operates freely, does not mean that it is OK.
In certain machines in the outlet...there is a small valve, coloured black and red or green and yellow. This sometimes when faulty, it gives the fault you mentioned. Sometimes an inlet valve gives the fault you mentioned. But from my expirience it is most of the time that the Spill-Valve is the fault.
Regards,
Fulltech.

SOURCE: Lack of pressure after releasing the trigger on the wand

Hello awcockerill:
This sounds like the bypass (unloader) valve is sticking. Here is a diagram of your machine's pump. On page 2.4 see part #1. The top of this assembly is a black plastic cover. Remove all of assembly # 1 carefully. Under that is part #8. This is the bypass valve. You need to pull this out, check that the o-rings are not bent, worn or damaged, then lube it good with a VERY VERY good waterproof grease. Re-assemble it and all should be well. The part numbers are on the diagram but where to get them depends on were you live. Karcher web site may give you a number to call. Good luck.

I have a black and Decker pressure cleaner pw1500. Oil needs replacing in the motor pump. How much oil needs to be replaced and what type of oil?

What makes you think the oil needs replacing. These pumps typically are sealed and have no servicing requirements. You one uses a 3 piston wobble pump which I suspect will have a grease packed bearing in it. (I haven't checked your one, but this is common in these pumps)

I just got a Toro 180 Power Cleaner, 4 cycl from my brother who only used it 3-4 times. It will not start. Could it need a spark plug? If so, where is the spark plug on this model?

First it is important to change the oil and a good level after filling long life gas valve Clean filter cleaning tank of the petrol tank.
by the time there could be Gummed sludge in the float chamber of the carburetor and finally clean the nozzle. the spark plug may theoretically have a gem, clean and check for a visible and audible sometimes blue spark. and finally, just check the air filter.

99% of the time is the fuel that has unstabled in your carburetor you can try to clean it but replacing would be recommended.

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly.
Things that cause this symptom are:
1. Debris in the carb float bowl
- Remove the carb float bow nut and clean out the bowl, the bowl but and up inside the treaded area of the bowl nut is the main fuel jet. Make sure to clean that also. You can try carb cleaner but sometimes the jet has to be removed to clear it.
2. Fuel selector sediment bowl is full of debris.
- Unscrew the sediment bulb under the fuel selector and dump out the sediment
3. Dirty fuel filter (if used)
- Check fuel flow at the carb main fuel line connection. If should fill a spray paint can lid in about 8 seconds. Anything less and you need to look at the fuel filter or fuel tank exit port as a source of restrictions.
Once you have good flow here you need to check fuel flow at the float needle.
4. Debris in the fuel float needle seat. Another flow check with a spray paint can lid catch basin.
- The spray paint can lid should fill up in around 10 seconds when you turn on the fuel selector.
Poor fuel flow here and you have to remove the float, hinge pin and float needle. Then spray into the float needle hole with carb cleaner with the MAIN FUEL SUPPLY HOSE DISCONNECTED. Also spray into the main fuel line connection so that any debris is removed.

Performing the above steps should improve your engine performance dramatically. If you still have the problem after performing the above steps respond with your ENGINE MODEL NUMBER and there is more that can be done.

Thanks for choosing FixYa, Kelly

Starting problems

Sounds like jets are plugged in carb. Take off carb and take apart and spray with carb cleaner. Use jet tools and clean out jets, spray with cleaner real good then put back together. You may need to get a carb kit if gaskets are dry rotted.

Wont start acts like no spark but is getting spark

Did you try pulling the spark plug and spraying some starter fluid or carb cleaner into the cylinder, putting the spark plug back in and starting it? If you've got spark and it doesn't start for a few seconds then you probably have carb problems. Good luck!

How can I repair my Briggs and stratton 6.5 intek

Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly

*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.
