Question about Samsung DVD-V6700 DVD Player/VCR

Samsung DVD-V6800 combo wont read any DVD's

To preface, ive got a 3 yo and the dvds we have are scratched quite badly.

the problem started with my lg dvd-vhs combo where it would not read any dvd's. anyway, after much playing around i decided that after 8 years it was time to purchase a new one. i bought the samsung dvd-v6800 combo a few weeks back and all was fine until i placed a pretty badly scratched dvd into it. basically it wouldnt read it, and as a result it will not read any dvd's any more, even the ones it was reading the previous day.

the player is still under warranty, but i feel that even getting a new player once i insert a badly scratched dvd i will have the same problems again.

now my theory is that possibly the laser is in a weird state as a result of trying to read the scratched dvd. my question is, is there a way to reset the laser/and or position of the laser ??? ive tried the power off/on, but no luck. i was wondering if there was a factory defaults setting or something like that which may force the laser caddy back to a default position ??

any assitance would be appreicate.
thanx in advance. I have the same problem even share the fact that it first went bad with LG player and a scathed DVD

Hi,

A couple of things you can try (prior to warranty repair/replacement):

  • reset by unplugging for an extended period of time (say half an hour or more);
  • try a CD lens cleaner similar to ones used for PC's CD ROMs;
  • play an ordinary VCD, music CD or a known good DVD;
  • open the try and spray compressed air inside;
  • gently tap the top cover right over where you think the laser eye carriage might be;
  • do a couple of load/eject.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Try to use a DVD cleaner first. Lens of DVD is very sensitive. Even a single dust will result to the lens acting up. It happened to me before and I just used a DVD lens cleaner and it fixed the problem. My player is a different brand but you can give it a try. Any DVD lens cleaner available in the market will do.

Actually..that is mostly due to the higher definition and quality of the dvd today..the older technology, was more
forgiving, so to speak..with not as much demand for fine imaging tech. So, if you can not recondition those dvd#with a cleaning agent, then you may need to not use them on the more recent vintage devices..

When you put disc in dvd player tray, optical laser got initialized automatically and all previous data in memory of player erased.
You should not worried about laser movement because its control by servo section of dvd player circuitry.
Kindly contact Samsung to provide warranty cover of your newly player.
Need further info, let me know please.

Can I transfer video tapes onto CD's

A lot depends on what type of video tape you use and where do you want to play the DVDs (CDs are for audio recording only). If tape is compact VHS then you can buy a simple DVD Recorder VHS VCR combo player and transfer across easily provided you have the compact VHS cassette module.

For other type of video camera tapes you will have to try other methods like connect camera with tape to a DVD recorder and directly burn the DVDs. You can buy attachments and software for PC but I have found these very cumbersome to work with.

My VHS-to-DVD Burned Disc used to work and now it doesn't

Richard,

It could be your disc is scratched or DVD+R can't be read in the DVD player. Check for any scratches. Then pop in the disc in to your PC DVD, to see if it's readable.

My combo drive is not reading CDs but reading DVDs perfectly

a different laser is used to read CDs than is used to read DVDs. The laser for you CD reader has most likely gone out of alignment. It's time for a drive replacement.

HOW DO I RECORD A DVD TO A VHS ON A VHS DVD COMBO BY PHILIPS

Cannot do this on a combo unit. There is a chip that senses copy protection and prevents recording a copy-protected DVD to a VHS and vice-versa. Solution: Use an outboard DVD player or an outboard VHS VCR and try the recording with the video routed through a "stabilizer" box. The stabilizer (about $30 or less on Ebay) defeats the copy protection on MOST DVDs, but not all. It works with Netflix DVDs. Route the audio as usual. Audio is not protected.
